Arboretum Lecture: Rebuilding Buffalo's South Park Arboretum - April 16

Posted:

The Campus Planning Office and the Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum invite the Buffalo State University community to a fascinating talk of the past, present, and future of the South Park Arboretum, a jewel of the Olmsted parks system, on Tuesday, April 16, at 6:00 p.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Vistor Center's Costello Hall. Margaret Lapp, director and curator of the South Park Arboretum for the Olmsted Parks Conservancy, will discuss the unique challenges of the short- and long-term plans of restoring the South Park Arboretum back to its former glory. She will discuss how the restoration of the arboretum will bring back Frederick Law Olmsted's vision of this great park. In recent years, the South Park Arboretum, under Ms. Lapp's leadership, has done incredible work to become an accredited ArbNet arboretum.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Please contact Steven Sypniewski, campus arborist, for more information. RSVPs recommended but not required.

Faculty Scholarship Series Workshop III: Playing the Open Access 'Mind' Field: Dodging Predatory Journals and Article Processing Charges - April 9

Posted:

Please join us for the final workshop in the Butler Library Faculty Scholarship Series, "Playing the Open Access 'Mind' Field: Dodging Predatory Journals and Article Processing Charges," on Tuesday, April 9, at 12:15 p.m. in Butler Library 318 (or online synchronous).

Publishing open access (OA) has become ubiquitous in academia and will continue to grow, as any federally funded study must be open access when published starting in 2026. Many obstacles and concerns surround open access publishing, especially predatory journals and avoiding the escalating costs of article processing charges (APCs). We will discuss strategies to avoid predatory publishers and dodge APCs in the open access realm. We will also discuss recent agreements that may waive OA publishing APCs for Buffalo State faculty now and in the future for some publishers.

Please register to attend either in person or remotely. Please contact Chris Hulsman, electronic and educational resources librarian, with questions.

Call for Proposals: AFP 2024 - Home: Building Our Collective Story

Posted:

Buffalo State University's Anne Frank Project is thrilled to announce its 16th annual social justice festival AFP 2024: Home: Building Our Collective Story September 25 and 26. We are currently seeking proposals from a variety of disciplines, cultures, perspectives, and communities to share and teach ways to build our collective homes.

Here at Buffalo State, we welcome students from all over the world to immerse themselves in education, diversity, and social justice. This is our community. What if we took this one step further and created an environment not only considered a community but also a home?

This year, we challenge our university students, faculty, staff, alumni, and off-campus audiences to define "home." How can we collectively bring our different stories together to build our collective story, our home? A home where our stories are protected, honored, and shared without fear.

Using our annual festival as a platform, we have the opportunity to achieve Anne Frank's wish to "repair the world" by deconstructing and rebuilding what we call home.

We invite artists, activists, educators, and students to submit proposals to AFP 2024: Home: Building Our Collective Story. All proposals must reflect directly on this year's theme and follow AFP's kinesthetic and experiential pillars: one-third theory, two-thirds practice. Our annual festival, an academic ritual at Buffalo State, is a unique way to emphasize the importance of doing for a more meaningful and effective educational experience. This reflects Buffalo State University's commitment to applied research and experiential education.

AFP staff members are available to assist proposers in crafting the kinesthetic element of their sessions.

Please visit our website to submit your proposal

Questions about the festival? Please contact AFP's assistant director, Jonise Hall.
