Call for Programs: Week of Welcome Spring 2025

Buffalo State student organizations and campus departments are encouraged to submit programs to be included in the Week of Welcome schedule of events for spring 2025.

Week of Welcome at Buffalo State University is a series of programs hosted by student organizations and the campus community to welcome our students during the first week of the semester. We are currently accepting submissions for programs and events taking place between Monday, January 27, and Friday, January 31. We also encourage you to post events taking place after January 31 on Bengal Connect.

Information on programs and events can be found by visiting the Week of Welcome Schedule through the Student Leadership and Engagement website.

Requirements to submit an event:

  • The event takes place between January 27 and January 31.
  • The event is sponsored by a Buffalo State campus department or registered student organization.
  • The sponsoring campus department or student organization has a confirmed space reservation with Events Management or the Campbell Student Union.
  • The event must be posted on Bengal Connect.

To submit an event, please complete the Week of Welcome Program Submission Form.

NYS Deferred Compensation Webinar: November 11

Mark Wallace, Buffalo State's campus representative from the New York State Deferred Compensation Plan (NYSDCP), will conduct an educational online seminar on the NYSDCP 457(b) retirement plan on Monday, November 11, at 10:00 a.m. The seminar will explain the benefits of enrolling and participating in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan and how it can help you better prepare for and live in retirement. The presentation will review the basics of investing, investment options, pre-tax contributions, and the easy and secure online enrollment process.

Emanuel Fried Drop Hammer Student Reading Series: October 31

The Emanuel Fried Drop Hammer Student Reading Series will hold its next event on Thursday, October 31, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 302. Special guests T. L. Sherwood and Karen Weyant will read from their work. 

T. L. Sherwood is the winner of the Gover Prize and the London Independent Story Prize. She was a finalist for Best Small Fictions in 2016 and has been nominated for the Best of the Net, Best Microfictions, and the Pushcart Prize. She has served as a fiction editor and on a board of education. She lives beside Eighteen Mile Creek, where she writes, gardens, and takes her wonder rescue dog for far too few walks.

Karen J. Weyant's poems and essays have been published in Chautauqua, Crab Creek Review, Crab Orchard Review, Fourth River, Lake Effect, Rattle, River Styx, Slipstream, Spillway, and Whiskey Island. She is the author of two poetry chapbooks, and her first full-length collection, Avoiding the Rapture, was published last fall by Riot in Your Throat Press. A recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Scholarship and Creative Activities, Ms. Weyant is an associate professor of English at Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, New York.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public.

The Drop Hammer Reading Series is a tribute to the legacy of our late colleague Emanuel "Manny" Fried.

Coin Meter Payments to Be Discontinued November 11

Posted:

Coins will no longer be accepted as payment for metered visitor parking beginning Monday, November 11. The individual parking meter heads in Cleveland Circle will be removed, and the pay and display stations in Lots I-30, R-3, R-4, and G-24 will no longer accept coin payments.

All campus pay and display stations will continue to accept credit or debit card transactions. For those who need to use coins during business hours, temporary metered visitor parking permits can still be purchased at the Parking Services counter in Moot Hall, where cash (including coins) and credit or debit cards will be accepted.

Your understanding is appreciated as we work to streamline and modernize our parking payment systems. Related questions may be directed to Parking Services, (716) 878-3041.

OSCQR Q&A Sessions: Getting Started with Your Self-Review

To support faculty members beginning the Course Design Review (OSCQR) process for summer and fall 2025 courses, Instructional Design and Distance Learning has scheduled virtual OSCQR Q&A sessions. Each virtual session is intended for faculty members engaged in the Course Design Review (OSCQR) process for a summer or fall 2025 course and who are working on or are beginning their self-review with OSCQR.

Please feel free to register and join us for one or both of these optional virtual sessions:

Each session will provide a brief overview of the OSCQR process, as well as how to complete your self-review with OSCQR. The remainder of the session will be open for questions about the OSCQR process and how to best meet standards within the OSCQR rubric.

Registrar's Office: J-Term and Spring 2025 Registration

Students can now search the J-Term and spring 2025 master schedules directly in Banner, view their assigned registration date (all registration begins at 6:00 a.m. on the assigned date and is then continuous), and any holds (if applicable). Now is the time for students to resolve any holds that prevent registration. Students are strongly encouraged to use Schedule Planner to plan their ideal schedule. Schedule Planner is also the only tool students can use to search for open classes. The Registrar's Office Registration web page has helpful information and links.

Registration begins Wednesday, November 6, for priority registration groups (PDF, 100 KB).

Tell Students: Law and Policy Review Club - Introductory Meeting: November 1

A new meet-up club at Buffalo State University the Law and Policy Review Club founded by undergraduate Matthew Karovski, will hold an introductory meeting Friday, November 1, at 3:00 p.m. in Caudell Hall 233. Members will have the opportunity to

  • discuss, research, and write about law and policy;
  • write and edit articles related to law and policy; and
  • work on web page design, communications, and photography.

Topics will include

  • the legal reasoning behind controversial judicial decisions,
  • the economic reasoning behind current and proposed public policies,
  • the societal trade-offs involved in law and policy, and
  • the impact of law and policy on society.

Light refreshments will be provided. This event is open to all and is sponsored by the Political Science, Public Administration, and Planning Department. Assistant Professor A. K. Shauku is the faculty advisor.
