Upcoming Fashion Talk: “Intersectional Identity” with Dr. Juliana Guglielmi-DeRosa

Posted:

Join us for a powerful evening of conversation and insight at our upcoming Fashion Talk titled "Intersectional Identity," featuring Dr. Juliana Guglielmi-DeRosa, assistant professor of Fashion Merchandising & Management at Thomas Jefferson University.

Thursday, April 3
6:00–8:00 PM
Bulger 217

With over a decade of teaching experience and a background as a buyer for Calvin Klein Global and Lane Bryant Outlet, Dr. Guglielmi-DeRosa brings both academic expertise and real-world industry knowledge to the conversation. Her research centers on social justice and fashion, and she encourages students to challenge norms, think critically, and explore how fashion, culture, and identity intersect.

In this talk, Dr. Guglielmi-DeRosa will explore the concept of intersectionality—a term coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw—which examines how overlapping identities such as race, gender, sexuality, and class create unique experiences of discrimination and privilege. She will discuss how these layered identities are reflected, shaped, and sometimes marginalized within the fashion industry, and how fashion can be used as a tool to challenge systems of exclusion and promote more inclusive futures.

This event is sponsored by the Grant Allocation Committee (GAC) at Buffalo State University, and Dr. Shantell Reid received the grant to bring Dr. Guglielmi-DeRosa to campus. The event is free and open to all Buffalo State students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a dynamic leader at the forefront of fashion and social justice!

LSAMP Orientation Meeting for Underrepresented Students in STEM – April 11

Posted:

Buffalo State University, as a part of SUNY Alliance, has received funding from the National Science Foundation to support underrepresented students in STEM through undergraduate research and enrichment programs. The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program is designed to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing and completing STEM degrees, ultimately helping to diversify the STEM workforce. The program focuses on transforming undergraduate STEM education through innovative, evidence-based recruitment and retention strategies, as well as providing research opportunities for eligible students.

We invite all underrepresented students in STEM to attend an LSAMP Orientation Meeting on Friday, April 11, in Technology Building 160. During the session, we will discuss eligibility criteria and available opportunities. Qualified students will be eligible for funding to support their research. Please encourage students to visit the LSAMP website (https://lsamp.buffalostate.edu/) and register for the meeting (https://bit.ly/lsamp-registration-2025). Thank you!

Registrar's Office: Cross Registration Programs

Posted:

As we prepare for upcoming Summer/Fall 2025 registration (registration begins April 2, 2025), now is the time to review the two cross registration programs; SUNY and WNY Consortium. When working with students, it's important to know the eligibility criteria for each program and the deadlines. Because these programs are offered through articulation agreements, eligibility and deadlines must be met, there are no grace days or appeals. There is no cross registration option for January term and Summer, no exceptions.

A quick reference flier has been posted for fall 2025 for students. We welcome your questions; for SUNY email crossregistration@buffalostate.edu and for WNY consortium email REGOFC@buffalostate.edu.

For J-Term and Summer, students can do Off-Campus Study.

Navigate - Late Semester Progress Report

Posted:

We extend our sincere appreciation to all faculty members who participated in our first Early Alert Progress Report via Navigate. We are delighted to share that we achieved a 70% response rate, underscoring your dedication to our students' success.

The Late Semester Progress Report will be available in Navigate starting Monday, April 7th, and will remain open until Friday, April 25th.

  • You may wish to read the How to Complete a Progress Report training guide.
  • You also have the option to watch a video on How to Complete a Progress Report. Access requires your BSU Username and Network password.
  • If your students are performing well and no Alerts are necessary, please log in to your Navigate account, access your Progress Report(s), and select the blue button: Submit unmark students as not needing feedback (I’m all done).

The Late Semester Progress Report, in particular, will allow faculty to raise the Recommended Pass/Fail or Withdrawal Alert and allow students time to make an informed decision before the Friday, May 2, 2025 deadline for those processes.

A Note About Raising Multiple Alerts for the Same Student

When submitting a Progress Report, if a student is having a particularly difficult time, with a multitude of issues, there may be instances where you want to submit multiple alerts for your students.  We have realized that this then creates separate numerous alerts for advisors and those multiples can be challenging to manage and to close. So, to minimize the volume of emails received by both students and staff regarding Alerts we are asking instructors to do the following:

  • For students, where you as the instructor have multiple concerns, please raise the most pertinent Alert, such as Recommend Pass/Fail or Withdrawal.
  • Then rather than submit additional cases for the same student we are asking you to include these concerns in the comment field that is available.
    • Options might include 3+ Attendance Absences, In Danger of Failing, and Missing/Late 2+ Assignments.
  • This clarity will streamline the process within Navigate and yet the advisor can still discuss all of your concerns at the same time.

Thank you for your continued efforts to support our students' success!
