Dianne S. McCarthy, assistant professor, Elementary Education and Reading, presented a paper titled “Preservice Teachers Write in Mathematics Before Teaching Others to Do So” at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Conference, held in Kansas City, Missouri, October 25–26. NCTM is the world’s largest organization committed to improving mathematics education for all students.
Jean Gounard, director, International Student Affairs, chaired and presented two sessions as part of the 12th annual Student Affairs Professional Conference, held in Buffalo on October 10: “The Many Faces and Opportunities of the Fulbright Program” and “The Meaning of Being an International Student in America Today.”
Shannon Gormley Budin, assistant professor, Exceptional Education, delivered an invited workshop presentation to the annual Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice Conference sponsored by the Division for Learning Disabilities in San Antonio, Texas, November 1 and 2. The presentation was titled “Delivering Linguistically Informed Reading Instruction to Students with Learning Disabilities.”
Bruce Bryski, associate professor, Communication, served as political analyst on November 6 (election night) at WLVL-AM 1340 in Lockport, New York, analyzing the elections in Niagara and Erie counties. Bryski is a frequent guest on local radio and television covering media and political issues.
Ann Brown, publications director, College Relations, co-chaired the international Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Annual Conference for Publication Professionals, held in Portland, Oregon, October 15–17. Brown was also a faculty member for the conference.
Zhang Jie, professor, Sociology, and director, Center for China Studies, published his article “A Case-Control Study on Marriage and Love Affair Related Life Events of Completed Suicide in Rural Chinese Women,” coauthored with Ning Li, in the Chinese Mental Health Journal 21 (9): 626–629.
Elaine Polvinen, professor, Technology, presented a paper titled “Fashion Education in a Virtual Environment?” at E-Learn 2007, the World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, and Higher Education, held in Quebec City October 15–19.
An editioned collage by Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, was included in a portfolio published by the University of Oregon and acquired for its collection. Mead presented a lecture titled “Collecting Western New York Artwork” in Batavia, New York, on October 2 as part of the Art Collectors Series sponsored by the Genesee Community College President’s Innovation Award Grant. He also gave a lecture titled “Women Artists of Western New York” at the Garret Club in Buffalo on November 1. Mead received the Ethel and Wilbur Lytle Memorial Award for his work in the 111th Annual Exhibition of the Buffalo Society of Artists, on view at the Premier Annex Gallery in Clarence, New York, October 5–November 3.
Joelle Leclaire, assistant professor, Economics and Finance, published “Seeking Full Employment in a Modern World” in the Fall 2007 issue of the International Journal of Political Economy 36 (3): 47–62.
Buffalo State College was featured in a case study by ANGEL Learning Inc., the provider of the campus learning management system, ANGEL. The study highlighted the dramatic increase in ANGEL use since fall 2005, as well as the relatively smooth conversion process from the college’s former vendor. The Buffalo State ANGEL team of Melaine Kenyon, associate director; Marianne Foley, ANGEL administrator; and Meghan Pereira,instructional technology specialist, Instructional Technology, contributed to the case study.
