The 2008 Summer Meeting of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), held June 8–13 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, convened some 700 scientists from 32 countries. Buffalo State’s team—represented byLyubov Burlakova, research associate, Mark Clapsadl, field station manager, and Alexander Karatayev, director, Great Lakes Center; and Alicia Perez-Fuentetaja, associate professor, Howard Riessen, professor, and Randal Snyder, chair and associate professor, Biology—was one of the largest.

All talks presented by Buffalo State scientists were well received and greatly increased recognition of the Great Lakes Center, the Biology Department, and the college.

ASLO is one of the world’s largest organizations of limnologists, aquatic ecologists, and oceanographers. According to its Web site, “For more than 50 years, ASLO has been a leading professional organization for researchers and educators in the field of aquatic science, working to provide for their needs at all phases of professional development. ASLO is known for its highly rated research journals, its interdisciplinary meetings, and its special symposiums. The society supports increasingly important programs in public education and outreach and public policy. It strives to encourage student participation and to increase opportunities for minorities in the aquatic sciences. ASLO fosters a diverse international scientific community that creates, integrates, and communicates knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic sciences, advances public awareness and education about aquatic resources and research, and promotes scientific stewardship of aquatic resources for the public interest.”

Kimberley Zittel-Palamara, Social Work

A study titled “Desired Assistance Versus Care Received for Postpartum Depression: Access to Care Differences by Race,” by Kimberley Zittel-Palamara, assistant professor, Social Work, has been published in the current issue of Archives of Women's Mental Health. Zittel-Palamara was principal investigator on the project; the study’s coauthors were Julie R. Rockmaker, AmeriCorps; Kara M. Schwabel, Creativision; Wendy L. Weinstein, Buffalo Medical Group; and Sanna J. Thompson, University of Texas at Austin. The paper has also been accepted for presentation at the Marcé Conference, “Policy, Planning and Effective Delivery of Perinatal Mental Health Care,” to be held in Sydney, Australia, September 10–13. The Marcé is a prestigious biennial conference attended by top researchers, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, midwives, doulas, and social workers from all over the world who study or work with postpartum mood disorders. Zittel-Palamara will also present a poster session at the conference on macro-level interventions for postpartum depression. Weinstein is the coauthor.

Rafika Merini, associate professor, Modern and Classical Languages, read a paper titled “Laclos’Dangerous Liaisons: A Contest between the Forces of Honor and Discretion and Those of Vanity and Individualism” at the 39th annual convention of the Northeast Modern Language Association, held in Buffalo, New York, April 10–13.

Catherine Lange, assistant professor, Earth Sciences and Science Education, has been awarded an American Association for University Women Community Action Grant for her project “Motivating All Students through Rolemodels.” MASTR will be a series of once-a-month informal panel discussion/dinner meetings for middle and high school girls, their parents or guardians, and school officials. The following meetings will be held on campus from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Science Education Center, Science Building 102:

Drew Kahn , Theater

Theater Department professor and chair Drew Kahn, his wife, Maria, and 16 Buffalo State theater students worked with the Olmsted PTO to create a World Arts Fair at Buffalo Public School 64, Frederick Law Olmsted School. The school hallways were lined with more than 1,000 flags made by the students, and the gymnasium was filled with stations that offered the kids and their parents an opportunity to explore music, crafts, games, dances, and sports from around the globe. In addition to the diverse artistic inspiration, much-needed funds were raised for Olmsted 64 that will provide for unique after-school curricula and extensive field trips.

Jean Gounard, International Student Affairs

At the annual meeting of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, held in Washington, D.C., May 25–30, Jean F. Gounard, director, International Student Affairs, chaired the annual business meeting of the NAFSA Francophone World Special Interest Group, where, subsequently, he was reelected chair of the group. During that meeting, official representatives from Campus France, the French Ministry of Higher Education, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., as well as official representatives from the business world, launched a debate on “Academic Innovation and Careers of the Future.” This meeting also marked the seventh anniversary of the signature of the Memorandum of Friendship between NAFSA and l’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie initiated by Gounard in 2001, since he was already chair of the NAFSA Francophone World Special Interest Group.
