Mark Warford, associate professor, and William White, assistant professor, Modern and Classical Languages, hosted a roundtable colloquium, “LOTE and Higher Education,” at the Western New York Foreign Language Educators’ Council’s spring meeting in Buffalo on February 28. They also presented a joint workshop, “Teaching Culture in the Target Language,” at the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers’ Rochester Regional Conference in Rochester, New York, on March 14.

Rafferty, assistant professor, Exceptional Education, gave two presentations at the Association for Childhood Education International Conference and Exhibition in Chicago, Illinois, March 18–21. The first, part of a research forum, was titled “Self-Monitoring for Students with Emotional and/or Behavioral Disabilities: Which Type Works Better?” The second, a short lecture presentation, was titled “Teaching Students to Self-Monitor in the Diverse Classroom.”

Joy Guarino, assistant professor, Theater, will present “Kids Are Kinesthetic Learners: Why Aren’t Teachers?” at the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts’ 2009 Arts & Education Forum at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga May 8 and 9. The national forum will differ from conferences where program overviews and success stories are showcased. Instead, the forum will consider dilemmas encountered in providing effective professional development in arts integration, promoting teacher growth and change.

Invited works by Buffalo State Design Department faculty members Jozef Bajus, Sun Hwa Kim, Tara Nahabetian, Stephen Saracino, Carol Townsend,and Robert Wood are included in the exhibition Clay - Fiber - Metal - Woodon view at Indigo Gallery, 74 Allen Street, through April 26. An opening reception will be held Friday, April 3, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, noon to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 3:00 p.m., or by appointment.

Gregory D. Smith, Andrew Mellon Assistant Professor of Conservation Science, Art Conservation, organized the symposium “Shedding Light on Art: The Use of Lasers and Other Intense Light Sources in Art Analysis and Conservation” at the Pittcon 2009 Conference & Expo, the 60th anniversary of the Pittsburgh Conference, held in Chicago, Illinois, March 9–12. Smith also presented an invited lecture, “Lasers and Intense Light Sources Used in the Study and Treatment of Pigment Degradation on Artwork,” coauthored with art conservation graduate student Stephanie Porto. Pittcon 2009 drew more than 19,000 laboratory science professionals from more than 70 countries. Smith’s symposium made the Cover Story section of Chemical & Engineering News, the weekly news magazine published by the American Chemical Society.
