Sharon Cramer, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, Exceptional Education, was a member of a panel of past presidents of the Northeastern Educational Research Association titled “Strategies for Writing and Dissemination: Publishing Is Not Rocket Science; You CAN Do It,” at the association’s 40th annual conference, held in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, October 21–23. The panel, chaired by NERA President Kristen Huff, was stimulated by Huff’s visit to Buffalo State in March 2009.

Carol Townsend, associate professor, Design, was chosen by the Chautauqua Writers’ Center’s poet-in-residence, James Armstrong, as the Spotlight Reader on July 28. Townsend read her poem “Where the Poem Hides” at the event, which took place at the Chautauqua Institution’s Literary Arts Center. She also was selected to teach two sections of “Introduction to Drawing” for Chautauqua’s Special Studies summer program.

Jörg Schnier, associate professor, Interior Design, published a book chapter, “Entwurfstile und Unterichtsziele von Vitruv bis zum Bauhaus,” on the interdependency of thinking mode and design strategy in architectural education from Antiquity to Bauhaus, inArchitektenausbildung in Europa von Vitruv bis Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts: Geschichte–Theorie–Praxis (Johannes Ralph, ed.; Hamburg: Junius, 2009).

Mary Pasciak, Patrick Lakamp, and Margaret Sullivan, Lecturers, Communication

Three current or former lecturers in the Communication Department received awards from the New York State Associated Press Association in September.

Mary Pasciak, a lecturer in journalism, received the honorable mention award in multimedia packaging for her articles on “Charitable Foundations: The Art of Giving,” published by the Buffalo News. Pasciak, a graduate of Buffalo State’s journalism program, has taught as a part-time lecturer with the Communication Department for several years. She shared the award with two other News reporters.

A former lecturer in journalism, Patrick Lakamp,received the association’s first-place award in the business-finance category for his reporting on the Leonard Stokes controversy involving the mayor’s office.

The Buffalo News received the Newspaper of Distinction award as the best newspaper in its circulation category (125,000 and above). The newspaper is edited byMargaret Sullivan, a part-time lecturer in media writing in the Communication Department.

The exhibit opened September 23.

Les Krims, professor, Fine Arts, is the featured photographer at Manifesto 2009, an international festival located in Port Viguerie, France. His submissions, on loan from the Baudoin Lebon gallery in Paris, will be on view through October 15. This festival, founded in 2002, was created to promote emerg­ing fine arts trends and to develop con­tacts and part­ner­ships among artists.
