Bill Grieshober, adviser, Small Business Development Center, presented “Listening Skills for Auditors” to 67 participants during the Institute of Internal Auditors Western New York Chapter’s Annual Student Night on November 20. The internal audit majors of the University at Buffalo made up 40 of the participants. This is the fifth year that Grieshober has presented the program for Student Night.

Lee Ann Grace, assistant dean, International and Exchange Programs, presented a session titled “Crucial Conversations” at the Region X Conference of NAFSA: Association of International Educators in Brooklyn, New York, on November 11.

Ann Emo, assistant professor, Theater, presented “Dress for Success, Circa 1905” at An Autumn Sunday Salon for the Darwin Martin House on October 19. She led a discussion on the influences of early-twentieth-century society on women’s clothing.

Shannon Gormley Budin, assistant professor, Exceptional Education, along with co-presenter Cathy Freytag, associate professor of special education at Houghton College, presented a session titled “RTI: Background, Clarification, and Implications for Students with LD and Their Teachers” at the annual convention of the New York State Council for Exceptional Children, held in Verona, New York, November 7-8.

Lisa Marie Anselmi, assistant professor, Anthropology;William Engelbrecht, professor emeritus, Anthropology; Susan Maguire, lecturer, Anthropology; and Kathy Leacock, lecturer, History and Social Studies Education, and director, museum studies program, served as members of the organizing board for the Eastern State Archaeological Federation’s 75th annual meeting, held November 6–9 in Lockport, New York. Anselmi served as program chair, Engelbrecht as local arrangements chair, Maguire as corporate sponsorship chair, and Leacock as registration chair. The conference attracted over 175 participants from the United States and Canada.

Zhang Jie, professor, Sociology, and director, Center for China Studies, attended and delivered a paper at the 14th International Conference of the Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the United States (ACPSS), held at Cornell University November 7–9. The title of his speech was “Beijing 2008 Olympics and Chinese Culture.”

John Thompson, associate professor, Computer Information Systems, participated in a distance education workshop panel at Niagara University on November 10.

James Mayrose, assistant professor, Mechanical Engineering Technology, recently published the following three manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals: “A Noninvasive System for Measuring the Biomechanical Properties of Soft Tissue,” in the ASME Journal of Medical Devices 2 (3); “The Safest Seat: Effect of Seating Position on Occupant Mortality” (with A. Priya), in theJournal of Safety Research 39 (4):433–436; and “The Effects of a Mandatory Motorcycle Helmet Law on Helmet Use and Injury Patterns among Motorcyclist Fatalities,” in the Journal of Safety Research, 39 (4): 429–432.

Jill M. Gradwell, assistant professor, History and Social Studies Education, received support from the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action/Diversity Leave Program for spring 2009–fall 2009 to join a national group of 30 researchers to investigate inquiry-based social studies classrooms.

Jean F. Gounard, director, International Student Affairs, chaired and presented a session titled “The Meaning of Being an International Student in America Today,” as part of the 13th annual Student Affairs Professional Conference held in Buffalo on November 15.
