Appointment: Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences

Posted:

I am pleased to announce that Brian Cronk has been selected as the new dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Cronk comes to us from Missouri Western State University, where he worked as a faculty member and administrator since 1993. In recent years, he served as faculty assistant to the provost, associate provost, founding dean of the Graduate School, and chair of the Department of Psychology, among other leadership roles.

He earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has served as secretary-treasurer of the Midwestern Psychological Association. He is invested in undergraduate research and was a nationally elected councilor for the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).

Dr. Cronk will start in his role at Buffalo State College remotely this month and will move into his campus office in Rockwell Hall on March 1. From now through May 31, Scott Goodman, interim dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences (NSS), and Carlos Jones, interim dean of the School of Arts and Humanities (A&H), will serve as officers-in-charge of their respective schools and help Dr. Cronk get acclimated to his new role.

Throughout the spring semester, the schools of A&H and NSS will continue to operate separately as we make the transition from two schools into one. I have asked Kelly Frothingham, associate dean of NSS, and Mr. Jones to lead this effort to ensure a smooth transition.

At this time, I also want to thank the dean’s search committee and especially its co-chairs, Julian Cole, interim associate dean of A&H, and Jill Norvilitis, professor of psychology, for their diligence in helping us find the right candidate.

I am excited about this new chapter in Buffalo State’s history. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Cronk.

Appointment: Assistant Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning

Posted:

I am happy to announce that we have selected Kim Barron as Buffalo State College’s new assistant vice president for institutional effectiveness and planning. Ms. Barron, who joined the college this week, comes to us from Metropolitan State University of Denver, where she most recently served as the associate vice president of academic effectiveness.

Ms. Barron brings 12 years of experience in higher education, eight of those in senior administrator positions within academic affairs. She has extensive experience focusing on higher education’s role serving students of color, first-generation college students, and low-income students in urban environments. She has also overseen campuswide institutional research and data-related activities that informed decisions regarding enrollment, student retention, and recruitment planning. I believe those skills—coupled with her knowledge and passion for marginalized students—will fit perfectly with the mission of the Institutional Effectiveness and Planning Office and the college as a whole.

I invite you to read more about Ms. Barron’s background in the biography below.

I would like to thank the members of the search committee and search chair, Kimberly Kline, professor of higher education administration, for their efforts and service to Buffalo State.

Lastly, please join me in thanking Eric “Luke” Krieg, professor of sociology, for his dedicated leadership in the role of interim associate vice president of institutional effectiveness and planning. Through Dr. Krieg’s leadership, Buffalo State successfully followed and assessed its strategic plan, which has enabled the institution to continually meet the quality standards of Middle States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE) accreditation.

About Kim Barron
At Metropolitan State University of Denver, Ms. Barron served as the associate vice president of academic effectiveness and as the accreditation liaison officer to the Higher Learning Commission, beginning in 2019. She also served as the director of academic effectiveness from 2017 to 2019.

Previous leadership roles include director of institutional accreditation and assessment, accreditation liaison officer to the Higher Learning Commission, and director of the Academic Quality Improvement Program at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, positions she held between 2013 and 2017.

From 2012 to 2013, she served as director of institutional research, director of Title III, and instructor in the Psychology Department at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

She worked as a research associate for the Minnesota Private College Council in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 2008 to 2012 and as an educational consultant in St. Paul from 2003 to 2008. In the former role, she researched state and national trends in enrollment, retention, completion, annual giving, student loan debt, and the demographics of Minnesota’s high school students. She then prepared in-depth reports for the council president and leadership at member institutions, along with disseminating data analyses to the Minnesota Legislature, media, and numerous other stakeholders.

In her latter role, she trained teachers, prospective teachers, and school staff in effective teaching and assessment methods. She specialized in providing data to support policies for students of diverse backgrounds.

She also was employed at San José State University as a research associate for Title VII and an instructor in the Child and Adolescent Development Department.

Ms. Barron earned a master of arts in education degree in language, literacy, and policy with a specialization in second language acquisition from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education in 1995 and a bachelor of arts in education from San José State University in 1991. She also holds TESOL certification from San José State.

Guidance for Employees Returning to Campus for Spring 2021 Semester

Posted:

As we prepare for the start of our spring semester operations on Monday, February 1, and as our spring plan is under review by SUNY, please review the following information to ensure a safe return to campus for all.

During the fall semester, the campus community was successful in complying with our health, safety, and surveillance testing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. We will continue to follow the campus safety measures put into place, including wearing face masks at all times, maintaining physical distance, washing hands frequently, staying home when feeling ill, and following the New York Forward guidelines for density.

Alternative Work Arrangements
The Governor’s Office of Employee Relations has extended alternative work arrangements (the state’s telecommuting pilot program) to April 2, 2021. Department heads and supervisors must ensure that staff members using alternative work arrangements have an approved plan on file.

Because Erie County remains under an Orange Micro-Cluster designation, all non-essential employees should continue to work remotely. Employees must communicate with their supervisors regarding their designation and their supervisor’s expectation of a return to campus for operational needs. Department heads and supervisors must review staff members’ essential status designation. If changes are required, please coordinate with your respective vice president and Human Resource Management.

Returning to Campus for Spring Operations
While many employees will continue to work remotely, it will be necessary for some employees to return to campus in order to assist with in-person spring operations.

Any employee who has not been regularly reporting to campus since the end of the fall semester (Thanksgiving break) who will now have an on-campus presence is required to complete the Employee COVID-19 Daily Screening Questionnaire for two weeks before returning to campus. Employees must complete the daily screening for travel history, COVID-19 history, and COVID-19 symptoms.

Employee COVID-19 Daily Screening Questionnaire
The Employee COVID-19 Daily Screening Questionnaire will be e-mailed to employees each day. To complete the screening questionnaire, please sign on to the Buffalo State Online Campus Health Portal (log-in required) and click the COVID-19 tab at the top, or copy and paste the following link into your browser: https://weigelsp.buffalostate.edu.

Employees who have been reporting to campus regularly over winter break should continue to complete the daily screening questionnaire and report to campus as scheduled.* All employees reporting to work must complete the questionnaire before arriving on campus.

*Please note, employees entering select campus facilities such as the Campbell Student Union and Butler Library will be required to present evidence (green dot) that they have completed their daily screening questionnaire.

COVID-19 Surveillance Testing
All employees who will be reporting to campus for the spring semester in any capacity must participate in periodic surveillance pool testing. Please monitor your e-mail for specific instructions when you are selected to participate in pool testing.

Orange Zone Reminders
Under Orange Zone designation, the following criteria are in place until further notice:

  • Non-residential gatherings are limited to a maximum of 10 people, whether indoors or outdoors.
  • Campus dining and food service operations will offer takeout service only.
  • Employees with the designation of non-essential are to continue to work remotely.

Return to Work Authorization and Campus Updates
The health and safety of the campus community is of utmost importance; as such, we remain in close consultation with SUNY System Administration, the New York State Department of Health, and the Erie County Department of Health. As we move forward, all employees who will have an on-campus presence this spring are required to complete the Return to Work Plan/ Authorization Form.

Please continue to review the Campus Updates section of the college’s Coronavirus Information website for the most up-to-date announcements and resources.

Thank you for continuing to do your part in keeping our campus community safe and healthy.

Survey of Campus Needs: E-signature and Automated Document Workflow

Posted:

The Project Management Office, in partnership with Finance and Management, is beginning an assessment of campus needs surrounding electronic signature (e-signature) and document workflow.

E-signature software leverages an audit trail to demonstrate the validity and legality of a signed document. It is equivalent to a wet signature. The software also incorporates document workflow and automated tracking of documents in process.

College employees move paper through many processes that require approval and signature. Administrative and academic personnel spend much time trying to track documents in a manual workflow as they circulate for signature. The purpose of this survey is to determine whether and how the campus will benefit from such a solution.

Anyone who circulates documents for signature, whether academic, business, research, or other, is asked to please take this survey. The survey deadline is Friday, January 22.

Spring 2021 Orientation Dates for First-Year and Transfer Students

Posted:

The Student Leadership and Engagement Office is pleased to announce its spring 2021 first-year and transfer student virtual orientation schedule.

Synchronous sessions will take place for three consecutive days at the end of January:

Tuesday, January 26, 11:00 a.m.
Wednesday, January 27, 2:00 p.m.
Thursday, January 28, 6:00 p.m.

Upon submitting their deposit, students are sent an e-mail registration form that allows them to self-register for one of the three sessions. Synchronous sessions will be hosted using the BlueJeans videoconferencing platform. Facilitators will use this time to welcome and engage students, educate them on available campus resources and student service departments, and ultimately impart information based on the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.

In addition to live virtual sessions, students will also have on-demand access to an asynchronous version of orientation. The asynchronous first-year and transfer student virtual orientation portal is currently open and available to students on Blackboard. This content will remain available to students throughout the semester. Through Blackboard, incoming first-year and transfer students will be able to learn more about their academic majors and other student support services.

Once students submit their deposit and confirm their attendance, they are automatically granted access to the asynchronous orientation portal. Students are alerted to this additional orientation resource in the same e-mail that encourages them to register for a live virtual session. This same e-mail communication also reminds first-year students to schedule a meeting with their adviser and informs transfer students that they can self-register for classes after reviewing the transfer student preregistration tutorial.

Detailed information about the spring 2021 orientation is also posted on the Student Leadership and Engagement’s orientation page. Live links are embedded on these pages to make it easier for students to access Blackboard, the Bengal Success Portal, and the preregistration tutorial.

If you have any questions or need clarification, please e-mail Shawnté Wilson, associate director of orientation.
