The campus community is invited to attend the 62nd annual Honors Convocation tomorrow, April 18, at 3:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The ceremony will recognize students for outstanding academic achievement. One of the oldest traditions at Buffalo State, Honors Convocation is held each spring to celebrate students who have achieved academic excellence. All invited students have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 and have accumulated a minimum of 60 earned credit hours at Buffalo State (30 earned credit hours at Buffalo State for transfer students). As a token of the college’s recognition, each honored student is presented with a Buffalo State Honors Convocation pin and certificate, and a reception with light refreshments will immediately follow the ceremony.

It is my pleasure to share with you the debut of our introductory video to Buffalo State’s new creative theme: Believe. Inspire. Achieve. Please take a few minutes to watch and enjoy this video, and then I encourage you to share it widely, including on your own social media channels. President’s Professional Development Award: Jennifer Toohey and Aimable Twagilimana

Posted:

I am pleased to announce that Jennifer Toohey, assistant professor of theater, and Aimable Twagilimana, professor of English, have received the President's Professional Development Award. Ms. Toohey attended the Intimacy Choreographers Intensive, an eight-day program held at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut, February 12–19. She earned professional certification as an intimacy director, making her the only director in the region and bringing a new level of distinction to Buffalo State’s Theater Department. Her professional development award profile can be viewed on the Professional Development website.

Dr. Twagilimana attended the Open SUNY Summit in East Syracuse, New York, March 6–8, where he learned from colleagues with expertise on online teaching and learning in and beyond the classroom. His professional development award profile can be viewed on the Professional Development website.

The President’s Professional Development Award supports professional development opportunities that enrich the experiences of all employees on campus by promoting opportunities that allow them to build on their expertise, identify best practices, and network with others.

Members of the campus community are invited to submit nominations for the President’s Professional Development Award by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. If you submitted an application but did not receive the award in past months and you are interested in submitting again, please resubmit your nomination. For more information about the award criteria and recipient selection process, please visit the Professional Development website.

Open Forum: SUNY Libraries Consortium Negotiations with Elsevier - April 30

Posted:

If you are interested in learning more about the SUNY Libraries Consortium negotiations with Elsevier in advance of the current contract’s expiration in December, please attend a town hall meeting on Tuesday, April 30, during Bengal Pause (12:15–1:30 p.m.) in Bulger Communication Center 214.

These forums are being held to update campuses on the SUNY Libraries Consortium negotiations with Elsevier to maintain access to the ScienceDirect product and to solicit feedback from campuses on the value and impact of the Elsevier contract in our work. As many of you are probably aware, the University of California system could not reach agreement with the publisher, and similar situations have been playing out across the European Union. The current SUNY contract comes up for renewal in December.

The SUNY Libraries Consortium—in collaboration with the University Faculty Senate, the SUNY Provost’s Office, the Buffalo State College Senate, and Buffalo State’s Provost's Office—is offering this forum at Buffalo State, and we hope it will be well attended. If the Elsevier contract is important to the academic lives of you or your students, please ensure that a representative from your area attends the meeting so your insights can be shared with SUNY System Administration. Thank you for participating in this important discussion on April 30.

Campus Printing, Printer Assessment: This Week

Posted:

ComDoc, a vendor providing print management services, is conducting a campuswide audit of printers and printing volume this week, in conjunction with Information Technology. A representative from ComDoc, along with a representative from Information Technology, will identify and examine every printing device on campus. Individuals in department offices and labs may be asked to provide information to the auditors, or to give them access to their printers. We ask for your patience, and that you be as accommodating as possible so that we may complete the audit.

The ComDoc consultant will be paired with a representative of campus Information Technology at all times. Do not provide information to anyone claiming to be a consultant unless they are with a representative from IT.

Please contact Maryruth Glogowski, special assistant to the CIO, with questions or concerns.

21st Annual Student Research and Creativity Conference: May 3, 4

Posted:

The 21st annual Student Research and Creativity Conference is Saturday, May 4, with an opening reception on Friday, May 3, at 5:00 p.m. in Caudell Hall. Each year hundreds of students representing every discipline on campus gather to share their research and creativity with our community. Buffalo State is nationally recognized for the extent and quality of its undergraduate research and creative scholarship program. Undergraduate research and creative scholarship activities represent one of the stronger examples of a high-impact learning practice that advances the key characteristics of Buffalo State’s mission. I encourage faculty members to attend and to urge their students to come and support their classmates.

The conference schedule and abstracts are available online.
