You’ve written an essay and you’re wondering what you need to do to edit it quickly and efficiently. Here’s a streamlined approach that can serve the purpose. "Write Right: Ten Quick Style Tips" is the next session in the Workshops to Success series sponsored by the Academic Skills Center of University College and offered free to Buffalo State students. Instructor-tutor Roswell Park, Ph.D., will share several quick-fix approaches for editing any piece of writing that will instantly improve your essay and—we certainly hope—your grade.

Did you know that there are ways to prepare for multiple-choice exams to reduce your stress and improve your score? There are! And students can learn these simple strategies in this next session of the Workshops to Success series conducted by Marie Ferraro and sponsored by the Academic Skills Center of University College. The workshop is offered free to Buffalo State students. These tips on test-taking preparation will help all students develop confidence when going into a quiz or exam.

The formats required for a research paper can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming. "APA Style: Why Does It Have to Be So Difficult?" is the next session in the Workshops to Success series sponsored by the Academic Skills Center of University College and offered free to Buffalo State students. Instructor-tutor Tom Renzi will clarify APA style, showing you what information to include and how to organize it. Librarian Lisa Forrest will acquaint you with resources in E. H. Butler Library.

Tell Students: Workshops to Success - Accounting: Making It Your Business

Businesses are concerned with the “bottom line”—they want profit. You should be concerned with the same thing, because when you strive for the best grade possible, your letter grade becomes your “bottom line,” determining just how much you’ll profit in this field. "Accounting: Making It Your Business" is the next session in the Workshops to Success series sponsored by the Academic Skills Center of University College and offered free to Buffalo State students. This workshop will clarify the workings of accounting for you. We will discuss both basic and complex things like FIFO and LIFO inventory terms; and straight-line, double-declining, and units of production methods of expressing depreciation. Be prepared to bring up any questions you have.

Want to run in the 2013 Buffalo State student elections? Fill out an application. The deadline to submit applications is Monday, February 25.

The following positions are available:

USG President (one position, one-year term)

USG Executive Vice President (one position, one-year term)

USG Treasurer (one position, one-year term)

USG Vice President for Academic Affairs (one position, one-year term)

USG Vice President for Campus Affairs and Government Relations (one position, one-year term)

USG Vice President for Public Relations (one position, one-year term)

USG Vice President for Student Life (one position, one-year term)

USG Senator (40 positions, one-year term)

Faculty Student Association Board Member (two positions, two-year term)

College Senator (12 positions, one-year term)

College Council (one position, one-year term)

Student Assembly Delegate (two positions, one-year term)

Intercollegiate Athletics Board (noncompetitor and at-large position available, one-year term)

Auxiliary Services Advisory Committee (one position, one-year term)

Wear orange, win an iPad from the Alumni Association! Wear orange on Fridays and show your Buffalo State pride. Rally your fellow alumni, family, friends, students, and co-workers to take part. Share your photos with us on our Facebook page. Participating alumni will be entered in a drawing each month to win an iPad, courtesy of the Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association will choose the most creative "orange" photos and share them in an upcoming edition of 1300 Elmwood and in our online community. We want to see you in orange!

Personal Photo Upload Requirements
If you are personally uploading a photo to the Buffalo State Alumni Association Facebook page, please include

  • "We've Got Orange!";
  • your city and state;
  • your company name (optional).

You must be 18 years of age or older to submit a photo.

On-Campus Photo Requirements

  • Visit the Buffalo State Alumni Association table each Friday from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Student Union Quad.
  • Participants must be wearing orange.
  • Participants must sign an on-site contest waiver.

You may submit a maximum of five photos per Facebook account each month.

Tell Students: Still Accepting Applications for National Student Exchange

Through National Student Exchange, Buffalo State students have the opportunity to study for a semester or an academic year at one of 200 participating colleges or universities at affordable tuition rates and receive credits toward graduation using financial aid.

There is still time to submit applications for National Student Exchange, but time is running out. Please let your students know of this great opportunity to attend one of the 200 campuses within the United States or Canada. Have them visit South Wing 420 for an application. Thank you.

Newman Center Lenten Fish Fry

The Newman Center will host a drive-through fish fry by Krolicks on Friday, March 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10; the meal includes 10-to-11-ounce fish, two traditional sides, and a roll. The pickup will be from the Newman Center off Penhurst Park. You may purchase tickets by phone at 882-1080 or from Carmen, who will staff the Newman Center table in the Campbell Student Union on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
