Professional Development Webinar: Dealing with Difficult People and Disturbing Personalities

Posted:

A person shows up at your desk yelling, crying, upset, frustrated, tearful, angry, overwhelmed, pushy, annoyed, demanding, obnoxious, intoxicated, disoriented… What do you do?

Attend this professional development webinar, "Dealing with Difficult People and Disturbing Personalities," on Tuesday, June 18, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center North 2C for tips on how to deal with these difficult situations.

Front-office staff are often placed in situations where they are nose-to-nose with students, faculty, and staff who are not at their best. Yet they are asked to create a warm, caring, customer-service-focused place for all those who enter to have their questions answered and inquiries responded to.

Join your colleagues from across the country as the presenters guide you through real front-line experiences and share what works and what doesn’t. The presenters have specifically designed a presentation for all staff members who are required to deal with the frustrated, upset, and—let’s face it—often annoying and demanding individuals who call, e-mail, or hover over our front desks.

There is something for every functional area across campus. The presenters will discuss how to address problems that affect many different areas, including counseling and testing, residence life, health services, admissions, student affairs reception, financial aid, registrar, police dispatch, bookstore, food service, library, computing and IT services, athletics, fitness center, president’s office, and academic affairs.

Register for this webinar at http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/classdetails.asp?class=3185.

Grading Reminder: Last Date of Attendance

Posted:

When issuing a student a non-passing grade, i.e., an E, F, U, I, or N, you must also report the student's last date of attendance when entering the grade online. This assists the Financial Aid Office in determining whether a student unofficially withdrew and whether the student is able to retain the aid he or she received.

The last date of attendance is the last date the student sat in class, took a test, or handed in homework. If assigning an I or N grade, the last date of attendance is the last date you met with the student to discuss progress in the course. If you have no record of the student attending, DO NOT enter a date. Instead use the grade EV, which indicates that the student never attended the course.

Questions regarding this policy or procedure should be referred to the Financial Aid Office, ext. 4902.

Grading Students Who Never Attended Class Using the EV Grade

Posted:

If you have no record of a student on your grade roster attending your class, you must assign the student a grade of EV. This grade distinction replaces the old policy of assigning an E grade and then e-mailing the Financial Aid Office that the student never attended. You no longer need to e-mail the Financial Aid Office of students who did not attend your course so long as you have assigned the EV grade.

Questions regarding this procedure should be referred to the Financial Aid Office, ext. 4902.
