Celebration of Computer Science Education Week

Join us in celebrating Computer Science Education Week on Tuesday, December 3, during Bengal Pause (noon–1:30 p.m.) in the Technology Building main lobby. Encourage your students to stop by to play video games or interact with digital stories developed by CIS freshman students. Recognize the tremendous job growth in the computer industry, which is causing a shortage of computing professionals in the United States. Discover what women and minorities have contributed to computer science. Learn about local technology companies and job opportunities, the CIS undergraduate program at Buffalo State, and computer science education in general. Stop by for refreshments and enter your name in a raffle drawing.

Tell Students: Housing and Residence Life Are Going Green in 2014

Housing and Residence Life are going green in 2014. Students will receive information about housing selection, student conduct hearings, and sanctions; updates about programs; and other information pertinent to their living and learning communities via their Buffalo State e-mail accounts and the Residence Life website. Tell students to check their e-mails for updates and codes for exciting giveaways.

Students are eligible to receive great prizes from housing and Residence Life simply by checking their Buffalo State e-mail and following the instructions to redeem a prize while supplies last. Prizes will be given out the weeks of November 25, December 2, and December 9.

The fall 2013 Learning Community Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, December 5, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Warren Enters Theatre. Please come to celebrate and support our first-year students as they highlight their Learning Community experiences. After the program, stay, mingle, and network with faculty, staff, and student Learning Community participants in the lobby of Upton Hall. E-mail Amitra A. The African and African American Studies Interdisciplinary Unit presents “Reconstructing Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi,” a lecture by Mathilde Mukantabana, ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the United States, on Friday, November 22, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Technology Building 160. The event is free and open to all Buffalo State students, faculty staff, and alumni. Sponsored by the Anne Frank Project, the women and gender studies program, and the English Department. Buffalo State Dining Teams Up with Students for Balanced U Brain Boosters Event

Buffalo State Dining's Balanced U program is a holistic approach to food and nutrition. It’s based on one concept—we eat food. To help students, faculty, and staff understand how food plays into health, Balanced U consists of monthly subjects that act as an educational opportunity to focus on food topics of interest to our customers. November's monthly subject is Brain Boosters.

Buffalo State Dining has teamed up with Lazarus Lynch, a student in the dietetics program. Together we have develop a Balanced U Brain Boosters menu for Buffalo State Dining's Balanced U event today in the Resident Dining Hall from noon to 1:30 p.m. Join us to learn how food plays a major role in how well we comprehend, retain, and recall information.

Health Benefits Fair for NYS Employees Today

Representatives from BlueCross BlueShield, Independent Health, and the Empire Plan will be on campus today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210 to answer questions about current health insurance plans and anticipated changes in coverage for 2014.

Staff members from the Employee Benefits Office also will be present to assist employees in making changes to health insurance coverage. Attendees may have their blood pressure checked; learn about the benefits of and sample massage therapy; learn how to maximize dental and vision care benefits from representatives of the CSEA and UUP Benefit Trust Funds; get ideas on how to balance work, home, and life from NYS Balance; obtain information about the Employee Assistance Program; and meet EAP coordinators. We will also have representatives from the Erie County Health Department with information on smoking cessation; Weight Watchers with information on healthful eating and weight loss, and Weigel Health Center with information on pharmacy services. Call Human Resource Management at ext. 4821 if you have questions.
