Your Research Project Involves Human Subjects, but You're Not Sure What Level of Review: Attend the IRB Workshop on November 7

Posted:

An introductory workshop on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) review process and ethics training requirement will be held on Wednesday, November 7, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Bishop Hall 18.* If you plan to attend, please e-mail Gina Game by Friday, November 2. Lunch will be provided.

Before the review process, researchers must be sure that their project is, in fact, human subjects research as defined by the federal government. In order to qualify as human subjects research, the following must be true: (1) The participants must be living. Thus, oral history projects fall under the guidelines, but research involving diaries kept in the 1800s does not. (2) The project is a systematic investigation; that is, it is designed to be a study. For example, instances in classrooms where teachers ask students’ opinions on the material to gauge progress are not research; however, if that same teacher designs a study to evaluate two different methods of teaching the material to see which is more effective, this would be research if the third criterion is met. (3) The project is designed to contribute to the generalized knowledge. To qualify as research, the person conducting the project must intend for it to be disseminated at some level. On our campus, we also review student projects that may not be disseminated but that meet the first two criteria so that our students will learn the process of human subjects research and because we have contracted with the federal government to do so.

* Please note: venue has been changed to the fourth floor of the Classroom Building.

Geography Awareness Week: 'Eat Local' Lunch and Conversation

Posted:

Declare your interdependence: According to the eat local movement, what you eat has an impact on the environment and the economy. When you buy local foods, your money circulates within the local economy and supports farming as a lifestyle. Urban farming reclaims vacant land for productive use. Come and taste dishes prepared using only local fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meats. Discover connections to local food producers and sellers. Join the debate between “The 100-Mile Diet” and “The Locavore’s Dilemma” on Tuesday, November 13, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Classroom Building A205 and A209.

Professional Development Webinar: Self Assessment - Don't Wait for Your Dean

Posted:

Every section of every course taught has its own personality created by the unique characters and skill sets of the instructor and students. Waiting until the end of the semester to compile a summative assessment of student success can lead to an instruction-to-learning gap that could otherwise be avoided. Turn the assessment cycle on its side by employing formative assessment of your class throughout the semester to see how students view their learning experience. Look at ways to use common survey tools built into your LMS or available on the web to gather valuable information as your course progresses.

Join us on Wednesday, November 14, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Professional Development Center, E. H. Butler Library 181B. This webinar is offered by the SUNY Teaching, Learning, Technology Cooperative (TLT CoOp).
