Bruce Bryski, associate professor of communication, was interviewed by NPR member station WBFO-FM 88.7 on August 25 about Governor Kathy Hochul's first press conference and speech following her historic appointment as New York's first female governor. Dr. Bryski discussed the tone and content of her speech and her style of governing, as well as the priorities and issues she faces.

Buffalo State College's Social Justice website received the Best of Category Award for Excellence in Digital Media/Individual Webpage Design in the 2021 State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNYCUAD) Awards for Excellence. Web design and development were completed by the web team, with special recognition going to web administration associate director and editor Mark Norris for conceptualizing and curating this page that speaks to the college's commitment to equity and inclusion. The annual SUNYCUAD Awards for Excellence honor top work from SUNY's 64 campuses. All judging is performed by peers working in marketing and development offices across the system.

Bruce Fox, university photographer in the Marketing and Communications Office, received the Judges' Citation Award for Excellence in Photography/Photo Series in the 2021 State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNYCUAD) Awards for Excellence. The award recognized his series of unique images of the new Science and Mathematics Complex. The annual SUNYCUAD Awards for Excellence honor top work from SUNY's 64 campuses. All judging is conducted by peers working in marketing and development offices across the system.

Arjun Pathak, Assistant Professor, Physics

Arjun Pathak, assistant professor of physics, published the peer-reviewed scientific article “Additively Manufactured NdFeB Polyphenylene Sulfide Halbach Magnets to Generate Variable Magnetic Fields for Neutron Reflectometry” in the journal 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing, a high impact factor journal. The article, coauthored by Buffalo State College student Devanshi Malaviya, reports the effectiveness of additive manufacturing for producing prototype Halbach arrays permanent magnet for polarized neutron reflectometry application. Polarized neutron beams are used to study a wide range of structural and magnetic phenomena spanning physics, chemistry, and biology. This work has been carried out in collaboration between Buffalo State and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Tennessee.

Karen E. Edmond, Director of Field Education, Social Work

Karen Edmond, director of field education in the Social Work Department, was appointed to the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Field Director's Committee for a three-year term, effective July 2, 2021–June 30, 2024. CSWE is the accrediting body for all social work education programs across the United States. Buffalo State College received CSWE reaccreditation this year. CSWE also acknowledges social work degrees earned in other countries. The council has an impact on educational policies, procedures, training, and accreditation processes for social work educational programs both nationally and globally.

Timothy Gordon, Vice President, Student Affairs

Timothy Gordon, vice president for students affairs, was recently selected to join the board of directors for City Year Buffalo. City Year, together with teachers and community partners, supports student success and works to improve high school graduation rates. This work is done through corps members who sign up to work with City Year in the Buffalo Schools for a one-year term after they complete college. City Year corps members are currently working in 29 cities, 21 states, and 350 schools across the country. The Buffalo chapter was established three years ago.

John Cabra, professor of creativity and change leadership, co-led an applied creativity workshop for the Joint Special Operations University in Amman, Jordan. This trip has prompted the development of a new “malevolent creativity” module in the context of counter-terrorism.

Arjun Pathak, assistant professor of physics, published the peer-reviewed scientific article “Incommensurate Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides via Mechanochemical Reshuffling of Binary Precursors” in the journal  Nanoscale Advances 3 (14): 4065–4071. The article reports new avenues for generating unexplored metal-dichalcogenides hetero-assemblies with incommensurate structures and tunable physical properties for energy applications.
