Regional Conference for Student Leaders Comes to Buffalo State

Posted:

By Tony Astran

Nearly 200 students from colleges across the region will converge on Buffalo State this Saturday for the third annual Western New York Student Leadership Conference. The daylong conference will provide students with the opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and develop skills to become effective leaders.

Eileen Merberg, retention and leadership specialist for campus life, said the conference tends to draw students who are resident assistants, orientation leaders, student government representatives, or student organization leaders, but is open to all. Students from as far as Finger Lakes Community College and the College at Brockport have registered. Past conferences took place at the University at Buffalo and Alfred University.

“This is an opportunity for area students to engage in leadership development and meet and learn from each other,” Merberg said. “Having it here gives our campus added visibility among our area’s future leaders.”

The conference runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union and includes lunch. Hal Payne, vice president for student affairs, will provide welcome remarks before the keynote presentation from Kristin Skarie, founder and managing director of Teamworks, a Rochester-based consulting firm specializing in student leadership development. Skarie’s visit is funded by an Auxiliary Services Grant.

Throughout the day, students will attend four of 16 available workshop sessions on topics such as creative problem solving, conflict management, personal health, and interpersonal communications. Many of thepresenters are faculty, staff, and graduate students from Buffalo State.

The cost to attend the conference is $15, and part of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. Reservations are strongly recommended.

The Western New York Student Leadership Conference is sponsored by the New York Leadership Educators Consortium, the Buffalo State Auxiliary Services Grant Allocation Committee, and the Student Life Office. For more information, contact Merberg, 878-5937.

Curricular Submission Deadline, Procedure

Posted:

From the Chair of the Senate Curriculum Committee
The deadline for all course and program proposal submissions is Monday, March 15. Any submission received after that date will not be reviewed until fall 2010.

All technical issues with SharePoint are handled, via Neil Palmer in Computing and Technology Services, at 878-4611. The Senate Office does not handle SharePoint technical problems. If you need to add a person/party to the workflow for your process, please notify Palmer.

When submitting a course on SharePoint, the blue routing form must be signed by the dean/associate dean and delivered to the Senate Office in order for it to be forwarded to the Bulletin editor and to the Curriculum Committee for review. Programs are not submitted via SharePoint. They will continue to be submitted via hard copy to the Senate Office and e-files sent to the Senate Office.

Curriculum course archival folders will be added to SharePoint (by Neil Palmer) for all departments. These folders are strictly for old or current courses, not for newly submitted courses. This will begin the archival process that the Senate Curriculum Committee has brought forth as a resolution to the College Senate, and also will eliminate these documents as TASK items.

Receipt of Legal Papers Served on the College

Posted:

From the Vice President for Finance and Management
The SUNY Office of University Counsel advises that all college offices should be notified of the procedures to follow regarding the receipt of legal papers of any kind by a campus employee. Accordingly, Buffalo State’s procedures are as follows:

The associate vice president for finance and management/comptroller is the college’s official liaison to the Office of University Counsel for the purpose of receipt of service of legal papers on the college, notification of the area of the college affected (required to respond), and decision about who should notify SUNY counsel, the attorney general, or other parties. When legal papers of any kind are served upon a campus employee or the college, the campus liaison should be contacted immediately and the legal papers should be forwarded to the liaison.

If the associate vice president for finance and management/comptroller is unavailable, the referral should be made to the assistant vice president for finance and management.

This procedure is especially important when legal papers request personnel files or information on students or are requests made under the USA Patriot Act. Various other rights, such as those afforded by FERPA, the Personal Privacy Protection law, and collective bargaining agreements are involved in those situations.
