Biology Seminar: 'Restoration of a Keystone Rodent in a Shrub-Encroached Landscape' - March 17

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department for the seminar "Restoration of a Keystone Rodent in a Shrub-Encroached Landscape," presented by Bradley Cosentino, assistant professor of biology at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, on Tuesday, March 17, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Technology Building 160.

All faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

Seminar Abstract
Modification of landscapes by humans is a major driver of declining biodiversity. Agriculture and urbanization have led to landscapes with wildlife habitats that are reduced in size, spatially fragmented, and degraded in quality. In the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico, grassland habitat has been replaced with shrubs because of livestock overgrazing, drought, and lack of fire. In this seminar, I will discuss my research on a landscape-scale effort to restore desert grasslands and grassland-dependent wildlife. The talk will focus on factors constraining the demographic and genetic responses of banner-tailed kangaroo rats to grassland restoration.

College Senate Vacancies: Call for Nominations March 30-April 10

Posted:

From the Chair of the College Senate Bylaws and Elections Committee
Three at-large College Senate positions will become vacant on August 31, 2015. Two of the three positions are reserved for academics. The third position is open to both academics and professionals.

At-large senators represent the entirety of the college. All full-time faculty and professional employees (PSC) are eligible to seek at-large senator positions provided they meet other eligibility requirements (see below).

The call for nominations for all positions begins Monday, March 30, and continues through 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 10. Elections for these positions will run from 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 20, through 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 24. The call for nominations and information about candidates’ statements will be posted on the College Senate website.

Eligibility: Current College Senate members who are completing two consecutive terms in their respective positions are not eligible for reelection. For additional information on eligibility requirements, please consult the College Senate bylaws.

Campaigning: The College Senate Bylaws and Elections Committee strongly discourages using college e-mail services for campaigning. Please limit campaigning to the candidate statement posted on the College Senate website (available to the college community on Monday, April 13).

Individuals running for a senator position in another election may not also run for at-large senator or university faculty senator positions while the other election is being conducted. If the other election concludes during the period when nominations for at-large or university faculty senator are still being accepted, eligible individuals may self-nominate for either position.

If you are interested in being a candidate, please contact Vince Masci, clerk 1 in the College Senate Office, ext. 5139. We look forward to your participation in the vital process of campus governance.

Leave Accruals to Be Restored for November 19, 2014, Snowstorm

Posted:

Due to technical failures in the new communication systems at the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations (GOER) and SUNY, Buffalo State did not receive timely notification of the governor’s authorization to close state offices on November 19, 2014. At that time, GOER determined that employees must charge accruals for absences on that day. Upon further review, GOER reconsidered its initial determination and decided that accruals will be restored for employees who were absent because of the storm on November 19.

The accrual restoration applies only to absences that were directly related to the storm. It does not apply to employees who were out on approved absences that were not storm related, such as sick leave or scheduled vacation.

The Human Resource Management and Payroll offices will review the attendance reports filed by professional and management employees and the biweekly timesheets submitted by classified employees to restore vacation, personal, or holiday leave charged for November 19, 2014. The changes will be reflected in the classified employee biweekly timesheets and the monthly online attendance records for professional employees by April 30, 2015.
