Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: SUNY Buffalo State Team

Posted:

Join SUNY Buffalo State and Crisis Services for the 10th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes community march on Sunday, April 26. Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women, and their families are joining Walk a Mile, the international men's march to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. The event is a fun opportunity for men to take a stand with women as allies, raise awareness, and rally the community to take action to prevent sexual violence.

Based on the old saying "You can't really understand another person until you've walked a mile in their shoes," this event asks men to literally walk 1 mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy but it's fun, and it gets the community to talk about a difficult topic: gender relations and men's sexual violence against women.

The event kicks off and ends at Crisis Services, 2969 Main Street at the foot of Hertel Avenue. The route takes supporters down Hertel to Starin Avenue and back again. Competitions and contests will feature activities, prizes, and more.

All proceeds support the Crisis Services Advocate Program, which provides confidential response and support services for survivors of rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, family violence, and elder abuse 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Support the Buffalo State team or join the Buffalo State team. Students and staff are welcome to join.

Please contact Paula Madrigal, wellness and prevention coordinator, ext. 4719, with questions.

Faculty Development Workshop: Utilizing Universal Design to Organize Your Online Course - April 1 and 2

Posted:

With the growing diversity of higher education students, do you ever wonder if you are meeting the needs of all your students? Could there be barriers that you are unaware of that make it difficult for some of your students to reach your learning goals? How can you create a curriculum that challenges and engages all your students?

This workshop will introduce participants to universal design for learning (UDL). Recognizing that diversity is the norm and not the exception, UDL considers the needs of the broadest possible range of users from the initial phases of course development through the implementation and assessment of learning goals. UDL strives to minimize barriers and maximize learning for all students.

Workshop participants will learn how to use the principles of UDL to eliminate barriers and create flexible learning paths to accommodate the interests and needs of all students. Creating flexible learning paths doesn’t mean creating a different curriculum for each student or making a course less rigorous. Participants will learn how to implement UDL principles to create an environment where information is displayed in a variety of ways, student engagement and perseverance are fostered, and students have the flexibility to demonstrate mastery in multiple ways. Most workshop strategies apply to both traditional and blended learning environments.

The workshop will be held Wednesday, April 1, at 1:00 p.m. and repeated Thursday, April 2, at 12:30 p.m. Both workshops will be held in Bulger Communication Center 120.

Register for the April 1 workshop.

Register for the April 2 workshop.
