Treating and Preventing Golf-Related Injuries

Posted:

Intercollegiate Athletics invites the campus community to a presentation by Michael Cicchetti, M.D., of Buffalo Spine and Sports Medicine on the treatment and prevention of golf-related injuries on Wednesday, May 27, at noon in the Bengal Room of the Sports Arena. Lunch will be served.

The discussion, which is the first in a series of talks to be hosted by Athletics and offered by Buffalo Spine and Sports Medicine, will center on the most common golf-related injuries, why they occur, how they are diagnosed, and what treatments are available to get you back on the course pain-free.

Cicchetti received his medical certification from the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), an organization that educates medical professionals about golf-specific injury assessment and rehab techniques. TPI has spent nearly two decades developing the "Body-Swing Connection," a core philosophy addressing injuries associated with the golf swing and how specific physical limitations can be addressed to improve performance.

Seating for this presentation is limited. Interested participants must RSVP by contacting Tom Koller, senior associate athletics director, 878-6514. Deadline to RSVP is Tuesday, May 26, at noon.

Hot Water Interruptions for Entire Campus

Posted:

To accommodate ongoing maintenance work on campus, a planned steam/hot water interruption will take place on Friday, May 22. The steam will be shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday evening and will remain down until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 24.

Although campus buildings do not usually require heat at this time of year, the procedure will interrupt hot water service to all buildings on campus. Operators of program functions that specifically require hot water or steam service are being contacted individually and accommodated.

Your patience and understanding are appreciated. Questions about this project can be e-mailed to VPFM@buffalostate.edu. Please refer to http://facilities.buffalostate.edu/ for the latest information about current and upcoming construction.

Pedagogical Institute 2015: Where Do We Start- - May 20

Posted:

The Buffalo State Pedagogical Institute will present Where Do We Start? on Wednesday, May 20, at 3:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 200.

Faculty members who are teaching courses with high enrollments of first-year students bring certain expectations to the start of class. What happens if the knowledge, skills, and behaviors of our students do not match our expectations? This session will explore the following:

  • The skill sets we might expect of an incoming student who has graduated from high school in New York State
  • The factors that contribute to students being under-prepared to meet college-level expectations
  • Strategies for faculty to facilitate the development of appropriate level academic skills and demeanors

Participants will develop a more accurate understanding of the skills of an average incoming first-year student, particularly in the areas of math and writing. Session leaders will discuss factors influencing various aspects of first-year performance, including students’ attitudes and approaches to college courses, homework habits, and exam and assignment preparation habits. Session leaders will contextualize first-year student behavioral patterns within cognitive, moral, and psychosocial theory in order to assist faculty in adopting strategies that support college-level performance.

The 2015 Pedagogical Institute is sponsored by the Professional Development Center, the National Coalition Building Institute, and University College with support from the College Senate.

Pedagogical Institute 2015: Promoting Higher-Order Thinking through Just-in-Time Teaching - May 20

Posted:

The Buffalo State Pedagogical Institute will present Promoting Higher-Order Thinking through Just-in-Time Teaching on Wednesday, May 20, at 2:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 200.

This presentation brings together previous work on academic rigor (Draeger, del Prado Hill, Hunter & Mahler, 2013) and just-in-time teaching (Draeger & Grinnell, 2011). Rigor happens when students are actively engaged in meaningful content with higher-order thinking, and just-in-time teaching increases the likelihood that students will be actively engaged with assigned material (Novak, et. al 1999; Scharff, 2013). The presentation offers strategies for designing higher-order-thinking prompts that can be adapted for just-in-time teaching in any course with any course management system.

The 2015 Pedagogical Institute is sponsored by the Professional Development Center, the National Coalition Building Institute, and University College with support from the College Senate.

Pedagogical Institute 2015: How John Draeger Made Me a Better Teacher: Or , Thinking about Thinking about Teaching - May 20

Posted:

The Buffalo State Pedagogical Institute will present How John Draeger Made Me a Better Teacher: Or, Thinking about Thinking about Teaching on Wednesday, May 20, at 1:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 200.

After participating in John Draeger's study on metacognition, or thinking about teaching, Daniel Blum, lecturer in the History and Social Studies Education Department, realized that he reflected on his teaching, but not as much as he thought. He found there was significant room for improvement. How does one think more deeply about teaching? What are practical things one can do to enhance the teaching process? Spurred by Draeger's study, Blum discovered some possible answers to those questions. Practical tips to improve teaching will be provided.

The 2015 Pedagogical Institute is sponsored by the Professional Development Center, the National Coalition Building Institute, and University College with support from the College Senate.
