Tell Students: APA Workshop - Writing and Formatting in APA Style: November 17 - For Students, by Students

Posted:

Senior psychology majors will demonstrate the basics of writing a paper in APA style on Tuesday, November 17, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Classroom Building C104.

Many upper-level courses have writing assignments, ranging from article summaries or critiques to 15-source literature reviews. This workshop will focus on literature reviews and basic formatting requirements for APA style, including reference lists and citation of sources. We can help with searching for appropriate sources, choosing key words, and using Google scholar. We can also take specific questions about empirical report papers (e.g., Research Methods). Bring your draft or outline with you, or just come and set up a basic template for the assignment you need to write. We will meet in a computer lab. All majors welcome.

Call for Panelists: Game as Culture

Posted:

Butler Library is seeking panelists for its Game as Culture panel on Thursday, November 19, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. (Bengal Pause). The panel is part of a weeklong event, Gaming as Culture and Career, that will include panel discussions, game demonstrations, and open gaming events.

Gaming has influenced our culture in many ways, some obvious and some subtle. The video gamers’ lexicon has influenced our language; video game elements have opened up discussions about sexism and racism; role-playing games offer an escape from reality by allowing players to create an alternative reality. How do you see the impact of gaming on our culture? We encourage faculty members with an interest or research focus on the culture of gaming to share their views and expertise with the campus community.

More details on Gaming as Culture and Career will be forthcoming. If you're interested in being a panelist or to learn more, please contact Leah Galka, academic outreach and engagement librarian, 878-3291.

Posted:

The Professional Development Center is accepting nominations for its 2016 Creative Leadership program, an individualized program of self-awareness, personal growth, and professional development designed to enhance individual leadership potential. The Creative Leadership program (formerly known as Achieving Success through Leadership, or ASTL) is designed for individuals who currently hold leadership positions at Buffalo State and are interested in enhancing their leadership effectiveness, including directors, department chairs, associate vice presidents, and others who have significant leadership roles on campus.

The Creative Leadership program has been offered for the past 10 years with very high levels of participant satisfaction. The program has been revised this year in response to evaluation outcomes and suggestions from program alumni.

Highlights of changes:

  • The program will be five months long and will include eight half-day workshops along with monthly coaching sessions.
  • Several 90-minute cohort meetings will be held during the final weeks of the program.
  • Participants will form several Action Teams designed to formulate creative solutions to a current campus challenge.

Nominations must be endorsed and submitted by the applicant’s respective vice president or chief officer. In addition to the commitment required of participants, supervisors must commit to completing a multi-rater assessment to provide feedback.

Download the flier (PDF) for an overview of this year’s program. Please contact Timothy Switalski, director of leadership development, 878-4432, to nominate a participant for the program or if you have questions or comments. Nominations close Tuesday, December 15.

Thank you for your support of leadership development at Buffalo State.
