Information Security Awareness: Uber Data Breach

Posted:

State laws set specific requirements for how companies communicate a data breach to consumers and to state agencies like the New York State Attorney General’s Office. Foreign countries also have breach notification laws, and these must be followed as well if citizens of those countries are part of the breach. Uber, a California-based company, seems to have violated these laws by not informing anyone, at least for one year, following a cybersecurity incident. A California company still has to follow New York State laws for those customers residing in New York State. If your information is involved in a data breach, the company is required to follow the law. Read more about the Uber data breach notification problem in Data Breach Today.

Information Security Awareness: Phone, Uber, Apps - Do You See It-

Posted:

For many of us, our phones are the featured instrument in our own personal betrayals. Participating in modern society seems to require apps. If you want to get a ride using Uber or Lyft, you must download the app and enter private information. Want to Skip the Dishes? Again, download the app and enter private information. Maybe you've turned off your location. But your IP address also gives your location; that’s why Google can still find the local shop you’re looking for when it has the same name as a local shop in Pismo Beach, California. Do you love personal assistants like Siri, Google, and Alexa? All are voice-activated. Do you think they only record when you use their name? Guess again. You may want to consider turning off your phone when you're not using it.

Information Security Awareness: Stop and Think!

Posted:

We've been seeing some truly beautiful duplications of the Federal Express logo and content sent through e-mail. They are phishing scams, but they look incredibly authentic. Please carefully scrutinize any e-mail you receive from FedEx, UPS, USPS, Amazon, or any other company. Don't click. Stop and think! Hover over the URL and see where the link is really going. Review the veracity of the information reported. If you're not sure, forward the e-mail to phishreports@buffalostate.edu.
