Call for Proposals - AFP 2019: Engage for Change

Posted:

The Anne Frank Project invites members of the campus community to submit proposals for AFP 2019: Engage for Change, the 11th annual social justice festival, which will be held on campus Wednesday and Thursday, October 2 and 3. AFP’s annual festival is an experiential exchange of ideas with a focus on processing theory into practice. We seek performances, workshops, and exhibits that actively engage participants in kinesthetic learning opportunities that

  1. explore the AFP 2019 theme;
  2. embrace the life and writing of Anne Frank; and
  3. explore a diverse array of disciplines, cultures, and viewpoints.

Proposals for the 2019 festival are due by 11:59 p.m. Monday, July 1. All applicants will be contacted by the end of July. Please submit proposals using the AFP 2019 proposal form.

About Our Theme
Communities across the world grapple with conflicts, challenging discussions, and injustices that often remain ignored. When these important stories fall silent, communities break apart and individuals are left alone. There is an opportunity within this struggle to unite and rebuild. AFP 2019 will examine unique ways in which people solve problems through the art of collaboration. In the Anne Frank Project, there is a specific philosophy that relates to this year’s theme: we agree we cannot do it alone. Whether we work across disciplines, neighborhoods, or countries, we need each other to manage conflicts, embrace challenges, and stand strong in the face of injustice. In honor of Anne Frank’s would-be 90th birthday this June, we encourage activists, artists, performers, and community leaders to share methods, practices, and experiences that ask people to come together to engage for change.

Questions or concerns? Contact Eve Everette, AFP assistant director and festival curator, or Drew Kahn, AFP founding director and SUNY Distinguished Service Professor of theater.

Professional Development Workshop - 'Managing Up and Across the College: Cultivating Productive Partnerships with Your Supervisors and Peers' - April 23

Posted:

Please join us for the professional development workshop "Managing Up and Across the College: Cultivating Productive Partnerships with Your Supervisors and Peers” on Tuesday, April 23, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in Chase Hall 109.

In a dynamic and complex bureaucratic institution, how we manage expectations, relationships, and projects with our supervisors and peers will determine how successful we are in attaining performance goals. This session is for any staff, faculty, or administrators who want to further improve how they manage up and across the college. As a result of this session, participants will be able to

  • understand the differences and similarities between their supervisor's and their own preferred communication, decision-making, and problem-solving styles to identify approaches for working more effectively together;
  • identify strategies for managing the expectations of supervisors and peers to successfully meet performance goals and avoid burnout;
  • implement influence tactics to successfully create buy-in from their supervisors and peers for ideas and projects.

Light snacks will be provided. Please register through the Workshop Registration System.

Chemistry-Physics 2019 Departmental Seminar Series: 'BTEX and PAH’s to the Environment' - April 18

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry and Physics departments for the seminar "BTEX and PAH’s to the Environment," presented Kate-Lynn Nowak, graduate student in the forensic science program at Buffalo State, on Thursday, April 18, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 173.

BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) is a grouping of structurally similar volatile organic compounds including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and the three xylene isomers. These compounds are known pollutants and are typically found near petroleum production and storage sites. BTEX are regulated toxic compounds while benzene is also an EPA target carcinogen.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group of compounds consisting of more than one benzene ring, are found in fossil fuels, tar, and various oils, and are also formed by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing compounds such as wood, coal, and diesel. BTEX and PAHs can both be measured in real time, with high-resolution techniques such as gas chromatograph mass spectrometer instruments (GC-MS).

Land filling is the most popular method of waste disposal and has been widely applied globally. BTEX is a major group of pollutants in landfills, which have now become a cause for concern worldwide because of their toxic properties. When an oil spill occurs, many elements of the environment may be affected. Oil spills can not only severely affect marine and plant life but can also affect human health with the emission of toxins into the air, such at PAHs. Two studies will be reviewed to determine the effect landfills and oil spills have on the environment.

Narcan Added to AED Units on Campus

Posted:

The Erie County Department of Health has given Buffalo State 100 doses of Narcan, also known as naloxone, to be placed in all automated external defibrillator (AED) units on campus, along with directions for use. This nasal spray medication is used for the emergency treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose. Signs of overdose include difficulty breathing, severe sleepiness, inability to respond to vigorous stimulation, and pinpoint pupils. This video and these FDA guidelines (scroll down to Instructions for Use) provide basic instructions on how to administer Narcan and properly dispose of used packaging. Both links are also available on the Weigel Wellness Center website. If you would like additional training, please call 878-6711.
