Educator Preparation Faculty: TEU Program Improvement Retreat - January 22

Education faculty, it's time to RSVP for the TEU Program Improvement Retreat on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center. Breakfast provided.

Who should attend?
Ideally, all full-time faculty in any educator preparation program at Buffalo State.
At minimum, a representative from each program.

Goals for the 2020 TEU Program Improvement Retreat

  • Explore your program’s 2019 data for NYSTCEs, Employer Surveys, Alumni Surveys, Exit Surveys, Student Teaching Evaluations, and any additional program-level data gathered via Taskstream.
  • Develop new (or monitor past) action plans based on recent data aimed at improving program and candidate outcomes.
  • Participate in reliability activities.
  • Share current program and department activities that will help us shape our story about candidate quality and program impact.

Tell Students: Men of Merit Leadership Conference - November 23

The 2019 Men of Merit Leadership Conference will be held Saturday, November 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center (first floor). This year's theme is "Paving the Way." This annual conference brings together attendees to discuss contemporary topics and hear from influential speakers in an open atmosphere that encourages dialogue and analysis. Opportunities to hear various speakers on topics ranging from emotional intelligence to investing in wealth building will be available throughout the day.

Attendance is limited. The deadline to register is Thursday, November 21. Please sign up for the event online.

'The Drowsy Chaperone' Continues This Week

The Buffalo State Theater Department and Casting Hall Productions proudly present The Drowsy Chaperone in Upton Hall's Warren Enters Theatre.

Hailed by New York Magazine as "the perfect Broadway musical," The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterly meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theater genre. Off-beat characters, mistaken identities, and romance drive the plot that is certain to provide an evening of laughter.

Directed and choreographed by Carlos Jones, associate dean, School of Arts and Humanities. Associate director Lee Becker; Associate choreographer Robin Barker. Featuring student actors Zachary Becker, Ezra Bedoya, Kent Botia, Kirsten Brady, Samantha Coleman, Salvatore Giangreco-Marotta, Corey Rae Gorski, Jake Grear, Amber Greer, Ian Hagerty, Kenny Lam, Kaeli McGinnis, Gabriella McKinley, Eddie Spaulding, Jacob Thompson, Elise Vullo, and Stephen Weisenburger; student designers Sydney Bouthsavong and Rachael Steinmetz, and student production team members Elizabeth Acevedo, Matthew Duncan, Amber Greer, Angelina Hunt, Azarius Matthews, Meghan Putman, and Alexis Shelley, as well as all theater practicum students. Milligan's Pantry Food Drive: November 21

The We the People EOP Transfer Student Learning Community will hold a food drive for Milligan's Food Pantry on Thursday, November 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union. We will have a table set up, so please stop by to drop off your donation to the food pantry. Donations should include nonperishable items that can be easily prepared or eaten as packaged. Today: Buffalo State, Hauptman-Woodward, BNMC Research Administration Panel

Buffalo State students, faculty, and staff members are invited to attend this evening’s lecture series panel presentation, focusing on the array of career opportunities in research administration, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center’s Costello Hall.?

Buffalo State College is partnering with the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to present a four-part lecture series focused on all aspects of research administration, a field that plays an important role in Buffalo’s growing medical community. 

Information shared by the panel is notably applicable to professional areas such as public relations, higher education administration, institutional advancement, government affairs, sponsored programs, and nonprofit foundations and organizations, among others.

Carol DeNysschen, professor and chair of the Health, Nutrition, and Dietetics Department, will speak this evening, along with Smitha James from the University at Buffalo; Pamela Marcucci from the Jacobs Institute; Ayo Odunsi, a certified public accountant who runs a research division at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Lisa LaTrovato from Hauptman-Woodward. Matt Enstice from BNMC will serve as the moderator.

The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is available though not required. Subsequent sessions of this lecture series will be held in February, March, and April 2020.

Retirement Reception for John McKinnis: December 5

Please join colleagues and friends for a retirement reception in honor of John McKinnis on Thursday, December 5, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 302. Dr. McKinnis is retiring from Buffalo State after more than 32 years of service in the College Writing Program and the English Department. He has also taught many courses in the Honors Program and writing courses for history majors. Please stop by to say goodbye and wish him well as he enters a new chapter in his life. SUNY Voluntary Savings Plan: 2020 Universal Availability Notice

The State University of New York provides employees with the opportunity to save for their retirement through the SUNY Voluntary 403(b) Savings Plan. Participation in the SUNY Voluntary Savings Plan is a great way to build your retirement savings through pre-tax and post-tax payroll-deduction contributions.

Whether you want to enroll in the plan for the first time or you are already enrolled but wish to change the amount of your deferral, you can do so through the SUNY online enrollment and management system.

For your enrollment or change to be effective in the first paycheck of 2020, it must be entered in the SUNY online enrollment and management system between December 12 and December 25, 2019.

Tell Students: Call for Proposals - SUNY/CUNY Undergraduate Research Conference: April 4

Buffalo State undergraduates are cordially invited to submit proposals to participate in the sixth annual multidisciplinary SUNY/CUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC-Upstate), an all-day event with luncheon and keynote speaker, on Saturday, April 4, 2020, on the campus of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse. (An alternative date is available for SURC-Downstate, to be held at SUNY Old Westbury on Friday, April 24.) Student proposals for research poster sessions, oral presentations, and performances of creative work are welcome. For further information, please visit the SURC conference website. The deadline for online submission of proposal abstracts is February 2020 (date TBA).

Conversations in and out of the Disciplines: ‘Is Anything Possible? No! But It Doesn't Matter’- November 22

The 2019–2020 “Conversations in and out of the Disciplines” series continues Friday, November 22, as Leigh Duffy, assistant professor of philosophy, presents “Is Anything Possible? No! But It Doesn't Matter.” The talk, followed by a brief Q&A, will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 320. A short wine and cheese reception will follow. Everyone is welcome.

Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming talks this spring, which will include presentations by Fiona Beckett, assistant professor of art conservation; Jevon Hunter, Woods-Beals Endowed Chair in Urban Education in the School of Education, and interim chair of the Social and Psychological Foundations of Education and Adult Education departments; and Kristen Pastore-Capuana, assistant professor of English.

The “Conversations” series was started over a decade ago by Ann Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, to “celebrate and draw attention to the research being done in various departments at Buffalo State College.” Over the last decade, colleagues from Anthropology, Art Conservation, Art History, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, and Secondary Education, among others, have shared their work with the Buffalo State and Buffalo communities.
