White Privilege and Black Failure: Three Responses to Bill Cosby's 2004 Comments

In May 2004, speaking at the 50th anniversary commemoration of Brown vs. the Topeka Board of Education, Bill Cosby created a stir when he chastised a section of the African American community, blaming African American failure on factors such as poor parenting, neglect of education, focus on material gains, and other adverse behaviors. The Edwin Mellen Press has just published a book titled Essays in Response to Bill Cosby's Comments about African American Failure (February 2007), edited by Theresa Mohamed with a foreword by Ali Mazrui. Three contributors to the volume will be on campus on Monday, March 12, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 111 to discuss their responses to the controversy. Dr. Rasheeda Ayanru (Le Moyne College), Dr. Theresa A. Mohamed, and Dr. Ednita Wright (both from Onondaga College) will talk about "Whites Talk White Privilege," "Cosby’s Statement: An Opportunity to Dialogue," and "Substance Abuse in African American Communities." The Buffalo State community is invited to the discussion.
