Website Navigation: How to Keep It Consistent

First-time visitors should be able to make sense of your website in a matter of seconds. Including too many navigation options makes it harder for your site visitors to find what they need quickly.

When it comes to website navigation, consistency is key.

Buffalo State College follows the +/-7 rule for global (top-level) navigation when developing its sites. Research has shown that up to six or seven items is the maximum amount of navigation a user can take in visually in a short review time. The more navigation options you have, the more difficult the information is to remember and process for your visitors.

Academic websites should include at least the following global navigation items:

  • About
  • Academics (or “Programs” or “Majors & Minors”)
  • Admission & Aid (or “Apply”)
  • Faculty & Staff (or “People” or “Directory”)

Additional items (up to a total of seven) can include the following:

  • Advisement
  • Alumni
  • For Students
  • For Faculty
  • Internships
  • News & Events
  • Outcomes
  • Research
