Webinar: 'Effective Victim Interviewing'

The Violence Intervention and Victim Advocacy (VIVA) office will present the webinar "Effective Victim Interviewing" on Thursday, August 9, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in Weigel Health Center 203.

The single most important factor in determining the success of the victim interview is the attitude of respect and professionalism conveyed. Therefore, it is critical for the interviewer to establish rapport and respectful communication in order to conduct an effective interview. This webinar will provide guidance on how to conduct a competent and compassionate interview while being mindful of the varying ways the victim may present. It will mirror End Violence Against Women International's (EVAWI) newly updated OnLine Training Institute module on Interviewing the Victim, which walks participants through the stages and techniques for successfully interviewing sexual assault victims.

This webinar is explicitly designed to reach a broad multidisciplinary audience, including not only law enforcement professionals but also prosecutors, attorneys, health-care providers, victim advocates, and others involved in the criminal justice and community response to sexual assault.

Webinar presenters:

Joanne Archambault (sergeant, San Diego Police Department, retired) is the founder and executive director of EVAWI, as well as the president and training director of Sexual Assault Training and Investigations Inc. She began her career working for the San Diego Police Department for almost 23 years in a wide range of assignments. During the last 10 years of her service, Archambault supervised the Sex Crimes Unit, which had 13 detectives and was responsible for investigating nearly 1,000 felony sexual assaults within the city of San Diego each year.

Roger Canaff spent many years prosecuting child abuse cases in Virginia and New York. In 2007 he became deputy chief of the Sex Offender Management Unit of the New York State Office of the Attorney General. In 2009, he took a position as a highly qualified expert working for the Department of the Army, specializing in assisting military prosecutors in investigating and prosecuting cases within the armed forces. He now trains, consults, writes, and speaks nationally and internationally on issues pertaining to sexual and physical interpersonal violence.

EVAWI is approved by the Board of Registered Nursing to provide 1.5 hours of continuing education to nurses attending this webinar. To obtain credit, nurses must e-mail their mailing address and license number to the EVAWI office. Other professionals may also be able to earn continuing education by requesting a certificate of attendance and submitting it to the organization that awards such credits. Requests for certificates and questions can be sent to the EVAWI office.
