Updates on School of Arts and Sciences Transition Committee

From the Co-chairs of the School of Arts and Sciences Transition Committee
The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Transition Committee (TC) is working diligently to finalize the draft of the bylaws for the SAS meeting and subsequent vote. Below are updates on our progress and reminders about important upcoming dates (including February 19 below). Members of the School of Arts and Humanities and the School of Natural and Social Sciences should send feedback on the Provost’s Task Force’s bylaw recommendations to their TC representative or to Susan Maguire, associate professor of anthropology, by 5:00 p.m. today, January 15.

Please take note of these dates and review your e-mail for updates from the TC:

Friday, January 22: The TC will send the Committee of the Whole (COW) its A&S bylaw recommendations (based on those of the task force), soliciting official written motions to amend, along with any rationale.

Friday, January 29, 5:00 p.m.: Written motions to amend are due. No new motions will be considered at the COW meeting (though these previously submitted motions will be able to be amended at the COW meeting).

Early February: The TC will consider the written motions, combining or tabling, as necessary, in conversation with each motion’s author(s). The TC will recirculate its bylaw recommendations, followed by each motion to be voted on at the COW meeting, followed by each tabled motion. The TC will also send along substantive and technical information for the COW meeting, Zoom “how-to” reminders, Robert’s Rules reminders, and the procedure to un-table a motion.

Friday, February 19, 3:30 p.m.: This is the COW meeting (on Zoom) during which time the COW will discuss and vote on the motions to amend the TC’s recommended bylaws (according to pre-circulated special rules of order). This will be a very big and possibly very long meeting. Please make arrangements to attend, if possible.

February 20–26: The TC will host an electronic vote on the amended A&S bylaws.

Note: Please remember that our goal is to establish the School of Arts and Sciences; once we have a foundational set of bylaws in place, we will be able to amend them in the future. Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments. Thank you.
