Update on SUNY Negotiations for Access to Elsevier Journals: Information Sessions December 6, 10, 12

SUNY is now in renewal negotiations with Elsevier, the world’s largest commercial publisher of scholarly journals. The current contract, which is slated to expire in January 2020, provides SUNY with access to Elsevier’s bundle of more than 2,000 journals published across all disciplines via the ScienceDirect platform. SUNY is seeking an agreement that is affordable, sustainable, and consistent with the SUNY University Faculty Senate’s resolution “Support for SUNY Negotiations for a fair and reasonable contract with Elsevier” (PDF, 367 KB).

Information sessions will be offered on the following dates to provide the Buffalo State community with an update on the negotiations, information about alternative ways to access Elsevier content if we are unable to come to terms on a new deal, and an opportunity for the campus to provide input. All sessions will be held from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Butler Library 314:

  • Friday, December 6
  • Tuesday, December 10
  • Thursday, December 12

Please contact library director Charles Lyons if you are interested in learning more but are unable to attend a session.

SUNY negotiations with Elsevier are still ongoing and have been protracted as the dynamics of the scholarly publishing marketplace are shifting. Earlier this year, for example, the University of California system could not reach a fair agreement with Elsevier and currently does not have direct access to current Elsevier content. Similar situations are playing out at other universities and systems. Please see this article for more information.
