Buffalo State was recently selected to receive a three-year federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on campus suicide prevention. This initiative, “Buffalo State Cares,” plans to enhance both on- and off-campus outreach to create a social climate that encourages detection and referrals and results in increased help-seeking behavior by students who are at risk for suicide.
Faculty and staff members are invited to this QPR training session for non-mental-health professionals on Wednesday, February 15, at noon in the Professional Development Center (E. H. Butler Library 181B). The focus will be on building awareness of warning signs of depression and suicide. It will also provide skills for identifying and intervening with an individual in crisis by getting the person professional help.
This initiative is aligned with the campus’s commitment to promote a more civil and caring environment for students on and off campus. Academic advisers are encouraged to attend.
R.S.V.P. at http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/classdetails.asp?class=2714 by Monday, February 13. Light refreshments will be served.
If departments or campus organizations would like to schedule a QPR workshop, please call Latise Hairston, Buffalo State outreach worker, at ext. 4847.
