Honorary Degree Recipient Pat Mora

Pat Mora, a nationally recognized writer, educator, and lecturer, will receive an Honorary Degree at Academic Convocation on September 21, 2006 at 12:15 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Rockwell Hall. The author of five volumes of poetry, over 20 children’s books, an extensive biographical memoir (House of Houses, 1997), a collection of critical essays (Nepantla, 1993) and numerous articles, Mora was born in El Paso, Texas, of Mexican-American heritage.

She holds a bachelor’s degree (1963) and a master’s degree (1967) from the University of Texas at El Paso. Mora is founder of El día de los noños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), a national initiative promoting literacy and global understanding through reading.

Mora’s work is regularly discussed in children’s literature classes at Buffalo State, and she met with students and faculty of the English Department during Buffalo State’s National Women of Color Day celebration in 2004. Mora’s books will be available from Barnes and Noble Bookstore at Rockwell Hall following the ceremony.
