Middle States Commission on Higher Education: Prep Visit Open Meeting - May 13

The Steering Committee for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) self-study was formed in November 2020. The members of this group were chosen to represent faculty, administration, staff, and student constituencies from across campus and hold membership on nearly 100 department and college-level committees and subcommittees.

The Steering Committee leadership (Kimberly Kline and Marnie Letzelter), guided by information provided at the MSCHE Self-Study Institute, developed a collaborative process for Steering Committee members to review the college’s mission, discuss forward-facing priorities with their constituents, and provide feedback to the committee. Upon receipt of all recommendations, responses were categorized based on common themes. A second collaborative exercise took place to formulate specific descriptions for each overarching theme. The Institutional Priorities that emerged are consistent with the college’s mission statement, the goals of the strategic plan, and MSCHE accreditation standards: (1) long-term viability; (2) student retention, support, and success; (3) serving as an anchor institution; and (4) academic and creative excellence.

These four institutional priorities were used to write the self-study design, which was delivered to MSCHE and is pending approval. As part of this approval process, a prep visit will take place on Thursday, May 13. There will be an open meeting with the college community from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. using LibCal. We would like you and your students to register for this meeting. It is open to all campus members.

Once the self-study design is approved, nine working groups will work from summer 2021 to March 2022 to each draft a chapter of what will become a self-study report that will be due in August 2022. In spring 2023, an MSCHE evaluation team will visit Buffalo State to evaluate and determine our reaccreditation.
