Project Flight, a Family Literacy Organization and campus partner, is teaming with Paul Alchem to give thousands of books and supplies to schools and to establish a library in Nigeria. The donation is worth more than $65,000. Project Flight Co-Director Dr. Betty Cappella was approached by her student, Mr. Alchem, President of Ekkleisa International, a faith-based NGO dedicated to “Rescue, Release, and Restore” Nigeria’s poor. This project supports Project Flight’s Strategic Vision that “literacy will be an entrée out of poverty.” Project Flight works with many international groups donating thousands of books to countries such as Rwanda, Ghana, and Cameroon. A hurdle when donating books overseas was overcome because Mr. Alchem arranged for Nigeria to waive duty fees. This program is supportive of SUNY Chancellor Zimpher's Six Big Ideas - SUNY and the World. The program also supports the College’s Strategic Plan, i.e., “Vision: as an institution that serves to improve our region, our nation, and our world, one student at a time; Mission: to empower a diverse population of students to succeed as citizens of a challenging world.”
