Project Flight Celebrates the Martin Luther King Initiative

Project Flight will make its annual donation of books to the Martin Luther King "Readers are Leaders Literacy Program" in 2011. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literacy Initiative is an annual program that results in donation of age-appropriate, new books to children in grades K-12. This year 3,918 books, worth approximately $34,644, will be donated to area children in need. Of the total donation, 490 books came from New York State agencies.  This year’s recipient is BPS School #19, the Native American Magnet School. Project Flight is co-directed by Distinguished Service Professor Betty J. Cappella and Professor Emeritus Geraldine E. Bard.

Project Flight has participated in the Readers are Leaders program since 2005. The total number of books given, including this year’s donation, totals 100,280, worth approximately $746,286.

Dr. King’s teachings inspire civic-minded service that can help improve our communities. Dr. King emphasized the important role education plays in opening doors of opportunity to all. The co-directors of Project Flight view the MLK Literacy Initiative as a very worthwhile and efficient means of distributing thousands of books to the children most in need. It is yet one more way that Project Flight is helping children prepare for the best possible future.
