From the President

Response to Governor Cuomo's Budget Proposal

Following Governor Cuomo’s 2011–2012 Executive Budget proposal on Tuesday, it appears that our challenge is far greater than we anticipated. We will continue with the process established, engaging the campus community to come up with the best ideas and strategies to reduce the budget gap. Our core values and the core mission of serving our students will continue to be our guiding principle. We will focus on maintaining quality in the student experience and streamlining students toward graduation.

The College Planning Council Budget Committee will convene in the coming weeks to discuss divisional reductions and campuswide impacts of individual decisions. Next steps include:

- The President’s Cabinet will review all information and make recommendations to the president by March 7, 2011.

- Decisions will be published for final comment by March 10, 2011.

- The president’s final decision will be publicized to the campus community by March 15, 2011.

These are difficult times. As I stated in December, we will reorganize, realign, and eliminate. We will be creative, listen to others, and collaborate—within and across departments, schools, and institutions when possible and advantageous. We will be concerned about people. We will accept this challenge and take responsibility for our decisions.
