From the President
Posted: Tuesday, May 20, 2014Response to College Senate Recommendation: Revisions to Clemency Policy
At its May 9, 2014, meeting, the College Senate voted to recommend to the interim president revisions to the current College Clemency Policy as outlined in the resolution below:
Current Policy: Academic Clemency
(Incorporating January 2014 approved revisions not yet in the catalog)
Any student with a Buffalo State GPA of less than 2.0 is eligible to apply for academic clemency when he or she applies for readmission to the college through the Admissions Office. The student’s last semester of enrollment must have been at least three years prior to the application for admission. Students can request clemency for up to two semesters of work (consecutive or nonconsecutive). These semesters are to be determined by the student in consultation with appropriate offices (dean, Educational Opportunity Program, etc.). A decision of clemency includes all coursework taken within the semester(s) at Buffalo State; it is not selectively applied. Clemency is applied only after a student has registered for an upcoming semester.
Revisions to the Undergraduate Clemency Policy
Introduced at the April 2014 Senate meeting by the Standards for Students Committee.
WHEREAS, students—regardless of grade point average (GPA)—may seek to improve their GPA upon readmission to SUNY Buffalo State for a variety of reasons (e.g., major admission, graduate school admission, scholarships); and
WHEREAS, students who have been readmitted in a new major may not be eligible for course repeats due to major restrictions in their former major program; and
WHEREAS, the current Academic Clemency Policy favors students who left SUNY Buffalo State while not in good academic standing,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Buffalo State allow the Academic Clemency Policy to apply to all undergraduate students applying for matriculated readmission, regardless of grade point average at the time of readmission application.
This policy revision is suggested to take effect immediately.
I hereby accept the recommendation of the College Senate and authorize the provost to oversee the implementation of the recommended changes to the college Academic Clemency Policy effective immediately. I further charge the provost with the responsibility of ensuring that these policy changes are updated in college documents as soon as possible and that the policy changes are immediately communicated broadly and widely to all faculty, students, and staff.
