At its March 14, 2014, meeting, the College Senate voted on a resolution regarding the water quality in the Science and Mathematics Complex. That resolution was revised on March 20, 2014, approved by the College Senate, and forwarded to the interim president for consideration and action:
Resolution Regarding Water Quality in the Science and Mathematics Complex
WHEREAS, poor water quality has affected the daily activities and quality of life for students, faculty, and staff in the Science and Mathematics Complex for over a year; and
WHEREAS, high levels of bacteria are present in the water when not treated with chlorine on a daily basis and past hiatuses in chlorine treatment were not announced and led to bacteria levels above EPA standards; and
WHEREAS, daily flushing and treatment with chlorine is expensive and disruptive to laboratory and classroom activities; and
WHEREAS, the chlorine treatment was never meant to be a long-term solution; and
WHEREAS, the SUNY Construction Fund has responded positively to finding a new outside consultant after recent inquiries from SUNY Buffalo State,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the College Senate request that the Buffalo State president and the vice president for finance and management continue to make the resolution of water quality problems in SAMC a priority and continue discussions with the SUNY Construction Fund with the goal that a new outside consultant complete work by early August and have a plan in place by August 31, 2014, to improve water quality in the Science and Mathematics Complex. The College Senate also requests that the president or his designee update the College Senate and SAMC faculty liaison, Dr. Kim Bagley, on these discussions and their outcome on a monthly basis.
I hereby accept the recommendation of the College Senate and authorize the vice president for finance and management to continue the monitoring and supervision of the plan to correct water quality issues in the Science and Mathematics Complex. I also charge the vice president for finance and management with the responsibility for providing monthly updates to the SAMC campus liaison until all issues have been resolved.
