I am pleased to announce that the following individuals will serve on the 2011–2012 Honorary Degree Committee:
Chair, E. O. Smith Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, History and Social Studies Education; Jane Armbruster, associate vice president for development, Institutional Advancement; Ann Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor, English; Charles Kenyon, associate vice president and dean of students; Kathleen O’Brien, director, Campus House, and lecturer, Hospitality and Tourism; Gary Pettibone, professor, Biology; Scott Propeack, associate director for exhibits and collections, Burchfield Penney Art Center; John Siskar, interim director, Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education, and senior adviser for the educational pipeline; and Aimable Twagilimana, professor, English.
Jennifer Blanchard, assistant to the president, President’s Office, and Maureen Lindstrom, associate director of information commons, E. H. Butler Library, will provide staff support to the committee.
The group is charged with identifying candidates for the State University of New York honorary doctorate, SUNY’s highest academic honor, and preparing nomination portfolios. Honorary degrees are awarded to recognize excellence that exemplifies the mission and purpose of the State University of New York in the following fields: public affairs, the sciences, humanities and the arts, scholarship and education, business and philanthropy, and social services.
Honorary degrees also can honor meritorious and outstanding service to the university, the state of New York, the United States, or humanity at large, or people whose lives serve as examples of the university’s aspirations for its students.
Names of suggested nominees for SUNY honorary doctorates should be forwarded to E. O. Smith, c/o Maureen Lindstrom, E. H. Butler Library 134, by Friday, April 13.
