Physics Talk: 'The Study of Galaxies and Galaxy Clusters Using the World's Largest Telescope'

Parker Troischt, assistant professor of physics at Hartwick College, will present a study of galaxies and galaxy clusters using data taken with the world’s largest radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, on Thursday, November 8, at 12:30 p.m. in Science Building 205. The data were taken as part of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) blind survey in order to locate cool star-forming gas in galaxies hundreds of millions of light years away. Collaborative work with undergraduate physics majors has allowed the determination of various properties such as distance, hydrogen mass content, rotation rate, dynamical mass, and dark matter content in a number of galaxies.
