Scott Johnson , Assistant Dean, First-Year and Academic Support Programs

A research paper by Cheryl Albers, associate professor, Sociology, was one of only two selected to be repeated as a closing keynote from the nearly 300 papers presented at the 2007 conference of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), held in Sydney, Australia, July 2–5. Albers’s paper was based on her sociological analysis of the organizational culture of Buffalo State that led to the revision of the Supplemental Directory of Policy Statements (DOPS) Policy on Scholarship Encompassing Applied Research and the Scholarship of Teaching. During the conference, Albers and Scott Johnson, assistant dean, First-Year and Academic Support Programs, led the second meeting of the CASTL Leadership group “Integrating the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning into Institutional Culture.” This international group worked on documenting successful models of using SoTL in higher education to foster communities of practice and to document and review teaching. Albers and Johnson presented policies and practices enacted at Buffalo State that recognize and reward faculty conducting SoTL.
