CPR/AED/BLS Classes, Other Bystander Intervention Trainings

In light of the recent tragic events in our community, including last week’s blizzard that has claimed 40 lives so far and the shocking injury to Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin during the January 2 game, Weigel Health Promotion reminds members of the Buffalo State community that you can be certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR/AED for a discounted price.

Weigel Health Promotion, in collaboration with University Police, will hold open American Heart Association CPR/AED Basic Life Support courses. Open course dates and logistics are to be determined. More information will be posted in the Daily Bulletin and on the Health Promotion web page and social media when it becomes available. Courses will be open to anyone on campus. If you would like to schedule a course for a class, group, team, or department, please contact Paula Madrigal, assistant director of prevention and health promotion.

Additional courses available each semester that can help prepare you in case of an emergency include the following:

  • Narcan (opiate overdose).
  • Stop the Bleed (tourniquet and wound-packing training).
  • QPR (suicide prevention and intervention - available online).
  • Do Your Part: Bystander Intervention Training: Theory, resources, skills, laws, and policy.
  • Others upon request. We can customize and tailor workshops to your needs.

CPR/AED Training
Participants will learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and provide relief to choking victims. Skills are taught for use with adults, children, and infants. The class is completed in about three to four hours.

According to the American Heart Association, 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because either they do not know how to administer CPR or their training has significantly lapsed. This alarming statistic could hit close to home, because home is exactly where 88 percent of cardiac arrests occur.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is a form of first aid, is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including heart attack, cardiac arrest, or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

First aid is the help given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment is available.

Why Learn CPR?
Emergencies such as cardiac arrest are more common than you think, and they can happen to anyone at any time. Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors.

Who Can You Help with CPR?
The life you save with CPR is likely to be a loved one. Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home. Statistically speaking, if called on to administer CPR in an emergency, the life you save is likely to be someone at home: a child, a spouse, a parent, or a friend.

Failure to act in a cardiac emergency can lead to unnecessary deaths. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival. Less than 8 percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital survive.

Course Fees
There will be an associated fee for the course, payable by cash, check, or money order, made out to Buffalo State College. Please drop off your payment at the Weigel Wellness Center during business hours one week before the scheduled training. (We do not have online payment options at this time, but we are working on it). Spaces cannot be reserved without payment.

$10 – Current Buffalo State students
$15 – Faculty, staff, or alumni
$50 – Community members

Space is limited. Registration will be first come, first served for those who complete the form and have paid by the deadline.
