Conversation on Mental Health and Wellness Programming at Buffalo State: August 8

We had a tremendous response to this week’s invitation to join the conversation about rebuilding groups and programs around mental health and wellness on campus. We are excited to start the conversation on Monday, August 8, at noon via Microsoft Teams. If you missed the message and still want to participate, feel free to join us as we discuss several possible initiatives, listed below. We have created a Googledoc of the fantastic resources, comments, and suggestions shared with us so far. Anyone can edit and update the document. The agenda is included as well.

  • Active Minds was founded by Alison Malmon when she was a junior at the University of Pennsylvania following the suicide of her older brother and only sibling, Brian. Alison recognized that Brian’s story is the story of thousands of young people who suffer in silence, young people who, despite their large numbers, think they are totally alone. A majority of mental illnesses start between the ages of 14 and 24, when teens and young adults are in school. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students.
  • Send Silence Packing is part of Active Minds and was once here at Buffalo State (in 2013). While this requires funding, we can discuss possible grants and collaboration opportunities.
  • Fresh Check Day, the signature program of the Jordan Porco Foundation, is an uplifting mental health promotion and suicide prevention event for colleges that includes interactive expo booths, peer-to-peer messaging, support of multiple campus departments and groups, free food, entertainment, and exciting prizes and giveaways. Fresh Check Day aims to create an approachable and hopeful atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health and to build a bridge between students and the mental health resources available on campus, in the community, and nationally.
  • We will also discuss current campus programs and resources available to students.
