The Campus Beautification Advisory Committee seeks your input about how to prioritize repairs to the grass alongside many campus sidewalks. The ravages of winter salt application, compacted clay soils, and (unfortunately) vehicles whose tires do not remain on the sidewalk have led to ugly ruts, bare patches, and mudholes when it rains. In the past year, hardworking Campus Services staff members have tried two possible solutions: (a) "turf blocks" that allow grass to grow through them and (b) "permeable pavers" that widen the sidewalk. These trials may be seen between Weigel Health Center and Perry Hall, and between the Classroom Building and Perry Hall, respectively.
In the trial phase, both solutions were effective and both cost approximately the same. Because of the expense, this improvement project will be phased in over multiple years, and we would like your help in identifying priority spots across campus. To nominate a sidewalk for improvement:
(1) Briefly describe the location you are nominating as a priority spot, and explain why your location is a higher priority.
(2) Identify this location with a highlighter or arrow on the "flat" campus map.
Please send your nominations (either electronic or hard copy) to Karen O'Quin, associate dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences, Classroom Building A113. The first deadline is Monday, June 10.
