Tell Students: AmeriCorps Community Service Peer Leader

The Volunteer and Service-Learning Center (VSLC) is once again looking for students for the AmeriCorps Community Service Peer Leader Program. This program allows students to serve at a local nonprofit organization while gaining quality skills for the world after graduation. In return for the commitment and competition of 300 hours of service during the 2013–2014 academic year, students are awarded a $1,175 Education Award from AmeriCorps. Applications are due Friday, April 26, to the VSLC, Cleveland Hall 306, and can be found on our website or by e-mailing vslc@buffalostate.edu.

Students can become a peer leader in one of the focus areas below:

  1. Education Corps — Provide in-class assistance and mentoring in West Side schools and with after-school programs while additionally recruiting and supporting volunteer and service-learning connections.

  2. Health Corps — Provide health, wellness, and nutrition education to youth and families in the Buffalo community through a partnership with a nonprofit organization. This could include continuing health programming at community sites, creating new programming, or conducting outreach to the community.

  3. Capacity Building Corps — Assist and collaborate with a nonprofit organization to meet an identified need, such as volunteer recruitment, community outreach, evaluation and needs assessment, or institutionalizing new technologies.
