Leslie Day, ’77, lecturer in Elementary Education and Reading, is also the director of the Professional Development Schools Consortium (PDS) and assistant chair for undergraduate programs and advisement. She uses her annual gift to the college’s Faculty and Staff Appeal to support different funds within her department.
“I really enjoyed my experience as a graduate student in the literacy specialist program,” Day said. That’s one reason for her generosity. She is also proud of the fact that the literacy specialist program remains very selective, accepting only accept 12 to 15 students every year.
After she graduated, Day taught at Pinehurst Elementary School in the Frontier Central School District and stayed connected to the college through the alumni Reading Chapter. “That connection gave me the opportunity to come here and teach in 1990,” she said, “and I became committed to teacher education.”
Another reason Day supports the college is her belief that Buffalo State offers a superior education to teachers. “All our students in both ex ed and el ed have had the opportunity to work in a minimum of four different schools before they graduate,” she said. “The PDS gives us an excellent partnership with the community and our partner schools; it’s a model of the wave of the future in teacher education.”
