Tile Mural Project at Asarese-Matters Community Center

Please join us for a reception celebrating the unveiling of the Asarese-Matters Tile Mural Project on Tuesday, September 20, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Asarese-Matters Community Center, 50 Rees Street, Buffalo, New York 14213.

The Tile Mural Project was a yearlong creative endeavor. Those who visited the center—whether children, adult volunteers, or undergraduate or graduate students—were encouraged to create original works of art that were transferred onto ceramic tiles for the project. These tiles were incorporated into a permanent installation on one of the interior walls of the center. Our goal was to reflect the diverse nature of the many children who visit the space. The process was documented to help teach art education students how to design and implement such a visual arts project within their communities.

The project was a part of the Asarese After-School Art Program, started in 2009 by Alice Pennisi and Candace Masters, both assistant professors in the Buffalo State Art Education Department.

Special thanks to graduate students Darlene Garcia Torres and Ashley Smith; Maureen McCarthy, CEURE associate; John Siskar, associate professor of art education and interim director of CEURE; David Masters; Marian Deutschman, professor emerita of communication; Sister Susan Bowles; and Benjamin Christy, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, for help and support of this project!

The project was funded by a grant from the Buffalo State College and Community Partnerships Office.
