Caribbean History and Culture Lecture Series

This academic year, the History and Social Studies Education Department, along with the Modern and Classical Languages Department; the School of Natural and Social Sciences; and Phi Alpha Theta, the history honors society, is pleased to announce the Caribbean History and Culture Lecture Series. The first speaker will be Dr. Gillian McGillivray (York University, Ontario), who will present “Blazing Cane: Sugar Communities and the Rise and Fall of Populism in Cuba 1898–1959” on Friday, September 23, at 3:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center West.

On Friday, October 7, Dr. Anne Macpherson (SUNY Brockport) will speak on female textile workers in Puerto Rico. Time and location to be announced.

These two speakers will be followed in the spring 2012 semester by Dr. Reena Goldthree (Dartmouth), who will speak about Jamaican soldiers during World War I, and Dr. Yvonne Fabella (University of Pennsylvania), who will discuss pre-revolutionary fashion in Haiti.

We look forward to seeing you at the lecture series.
