What If Each Letter of the Alphabet Was A Color?

What if one sensory pathway led to an automatic experience in a second sensory pathway? This is life for the synesthete—some hear colors, smell sounds, or taste shapes!

The Design and Psychology departments, in conjunction with the Burchfield Penney Art Center, invite you to attend "Exploring Synesthesia in American Art," Thursday, April 7, at 12:15 p.m. in the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium. Carol Steen is the co-founder of the American Synesthesia Association, a synesthete, visual artist, writer, and professor of art. She lectures worldwide on the subject of synesthesia and art and has been interviewed on 60 Minutes. Her lecture is made possible through funding by the Faculty-Student Association, an Auxiliary Services grant, and the Margaret E. Bacon Visiting Visual Artist Series Fund.

Steen 's lecture will be followed by a "meet the artist" reception. A panel discussion funded by the New York State Council for the Humanities featuring Steen, other artists, psychologists, the curator of the current BPAC exhibition, and a Burchfield scholar, will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. For more information, please see the attached flyer (PDF).
