Professional Development - Confronting Biased Statements in Class (and Other) Discussions

Many of us have had experiences where a productive discussion in a class or meeting was jeopardized by someone making a sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise biased statement. Responding to such statements often is quite challenging because it involves balancing competing concerns including educating others about why the statement is biased, maintaining a safe environment, and not attacking the person who made the statement. We will discuss different methods of confronting biased statements, as well as when different kinds of responses may be appropriate. The session will be moderated by Kim Zittel of the Social Work Department and Women’s Studies program. A light lunch will be served. Friday, February 25, noon–1:00 p.m. in the Professional Development Center, E. H. Butler Library 181B.
