Valentin Brimkov, Professor, Mathematics

A paper on problems of intersection graph theory, coauthored by Valentin E. Brimkov, professor of mathematics, and undergraduates Sean Kafer and Matthew Szczepankiewicz from UB and Joshua Terhaar from Buffalo State, has been accepted for publication in the professional journal Discrete Applied Mathematics (Elsevier, forthcoming). The paper received the Best Student Paper Award at a reputable international conference on Combinatorial Image Analysis held in Brno, Czech Republic, in 2014. The paper’s findings provoked considerable interest in the scientific community, and soon after the conference, Jan Kratochvil, a world leader in this research area, and three other established researchers invited Brimkov and his team to combine their efforts and write an extensive paper on the matter. This publication is the result of much hard work by the authors and a prolonged review process.
