Individuals recovering from mental illness or substance abuse will share their journeys through artwork in a special exhibit titled Restoring Dignity through the Arts, on view Saturday, May 19, from noon to 5:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
Through painting, sculpture, weaving, photography, poetry, music, and video, artists 18 and older will illustrate the need for acceptance, dignity, and social inclusion for people in recovery. Both Native and non-Native artists from Western New York and Southern Ontario will contribute to the exhibit. A panel of judges will select works for an exhibit to tour various locations in Western New York. The artworks will also be displayed at www.wnyil.org and www.wnyil.org/oahiio. Other activities scheduled to take place during the exhibit include a wellness fair, a cultural diversity performance, and an exhibit of posters chosen to promote Restoring Dignity through the Arts activities and related exhibits. For more information, contact Allen Jamieson, coordinator of the exhibit, 603-4546.
The show is jointly sponsored by Western New York Independent Living Inc., OAHIIO, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Exceptional Education Department and School of Education at Buffalo State College.
